Just under on both. I mean I don't honestly know why I care. The rational part of my brain is telling me that middle school 6th grade math placement will not ruin him forever and won't stop him from his dream job of a scientist. The irrational part of my brain sure is loud though. |
He can still take algebra as an 8th grader with plenty of time for calculus. But he’s a 5th grader. Stop the pressure. He may change his dreams 1000000 times. |
Has he expressed a strong preference? I know my kid was quite anxious. |
He 100% wants to be in accelerated classes. That is pretty much the main thing he is looking forward to in MS but he is also an anxious kid when it comes to work (perfectionist). So it's really probably fine. |
Right, I did see that. Don't worry. I don't say anything to him. It is all in my own head and on DCUM lol. |
I totally understand having a perfectionist kid. He might be a kid who gets moved a few weeks into the year |
Yeah, we shall see. I assume the schools knows what they are doing (maybe lol) |
Excuses? No, I’m explaining why I think the teacher input factored in - because the kid goofs off and doesn’t take it seriously. Even though kid clearly knows the content. And pre-alg for 7th really is not all that accelerated. I have older kids who’ve taken more accelerated paths. Part of why kid goofed off is that math 6 is boring AF. |
It’s rushed for sure. It’s fine if the kids have a good teacher, but it can be really bad if the teacher sucks. It’s a shame they don’t offer an intermediate option. Math 6 is boring. |
Can’t speak to “Math 6 is boring AF”, since, you know, I’m an adult and not actually in the room. |
That’s crazy. 1030 used to be the cutoff for algebra. They used to put most advanced kids in the advanced math class in 6th. They are screwing over a lot of capable kids with artificially high score cutoffs. |
I know many kids who’ve done math 6 & kids who did pre-alg for 6th (math 6/7/8). Consensus is that math 6 is boring AF. Have you seen the syllabus? Very, very little new material after 5th. |
It is not really 1046 though. The kids I know that got in to pre algebra got 973 and 897 on the MI. One scored under 550 on the SOL and one scored above. So I don't know why they give that score. Plus it seems like you only need to score really high one on metric. |
Be honest, are their parents demanding? Like were they placed there because the parents would cause a fuss if they weren’t? |
No far from it. The would be some of the last folks to do such a thing (IMO). The folks I know that do make a fuss, their kids didn't get in. |
