Future of the Walter Reed area

+1 I still find the area around Walter Reed super ugly. In addition, you are closer to downtown SS (which has its own issues) than DC.

You find Shepherd Park and Colonial Village super ugly? Wow.

The schools are bad too, except for SP, but the new development is not zoned for that school.

There are a lot of popular charters up in that area though

Which ones? Because DCI is a middle/high school, which mostly only accepts students from its feeders.

Breakthrough Montessori, Cap City, and DCI. DCB and LAMB (DCI feeders) aren't far. Washington Latin also isn't far.

Have you seen their waitlist? These are not easy to get into. Hopefully, no one moves there expecting to attend them.

The exact boundaries of Manor Park and Brightwood are not that well defined but if you enter that slice of DC bound by Blair, Georgia, and Missouri it's really obvious that the neighborhood is not uniform and some parts look better than others. A lot of this may be subjective. At the end of the day I'm not really sure any of it matters, but apparently people are very sensitive about it.

That encompasses all of Manor Park, 95% of Takoma, and arguably 5 square blocks of Brightwood. Nobody said the neighborhood was uniform, it's the argument that the area you're describing makes Brightwood dumpy *as opposed to* Manor Park and Takoma that makes no sense. It's simply nonsense. It's the equivalent of saying Logan Circle is an eyesore, unlike Dupont, because Connecticut between N and R have some empty storefronts. The terms are being used incorrectly, and then doubled and tripled down on for no reason.

On a separate note I really have a hard time believing that anyone who currently lives near Walter Reed would come to DCUM to ask people obsessed with AU Park about the future of the redevelopment. There's no new information here, and plenty on the ground at the site.

I made this thread because I wanted other people’s opinions, not just my own.

And? I didn't say I don't believe that someone who lives elsewhere would post this thread; someone does it every six months. I said that I don't believe someone who currently lives near Walter Reed would post this, and I still don't believe you live here. "It seems like things are looking up for that neighborhood and its surrounds" is not what someone who lives here, or even nearby, would say.

There is some dumpiness in Brightwood, but for the most part Georgia does not really match its surroundings. I am not sure what it will take to change that--perhaps Walter Reed is a start.

What on earth? Brightwood is no more "dumpy" than Takoma or Manor Park, which is to say: not at all. In fact it has much larger and nicer SFHs and lots than Manor Park, although MP has its own charm. These threads are so ridiculous and always reveal that the "I live nearby too" people are people who moved to Brightwood Park 5 years ago after a realtor convinced them it was Petworth.

You lack reading comprehension. I’m one of the PP’s that used the term dumpy but I explicitly said that I was referring to the retail corridor on Georgia, while the neighborhoods are nice. If you don’t think the retail strip around brightwood is dumpy you are an idiot. Also I’ve been here longer than you, I can almost guarantee it. Been going to 2mac’s barbershop since when none of you white folks would even venture across the park.

That's actually explicitly what you did not say. You said Georgia is dumpy and then you also said the surrounding neighborhoods are "mostly pretty nice," but "there is some dumpiness in Brightwood, but for the most part Georgia does not really match the surroundings." So the neighborhoods are mostly not dumpy like Georgia Avenue, except Brightwood. You called Georgia dumpy, and then in the next sentence also called Brightwood dumpy, and now you're trying to hide behind an uneven edge up to claim you only said the first part. Good luck on "almost guaranteeing" your bona fides, you're probably as good at that as you are guessing race on the internet or retroactively rewriting your posts.

I didn’t even mention Brightwood, genius. Here is what I wrote:

“Im from the area too, and I don’t know why you guys act amazed. The main strip of Georgia from basically military up to silver spring was always very dumpy and Walter Reed is a major factor in changing that. Unless you drive back into the neighborhoods to see how lovely shepherd park / Takoma are, it still seems pretty dumpy to this day.”

And the sole reason that I mentioned my “bona fides” is because the PP I was responding to mockingly said that I moved into the neighborhood 5 years ago, which is hilarious because again ai grew up here, so your little clap back that I must do that all the time is just all around dumb. Anyways, feel free to get the last word in because it’s too hot out to be bickering with a bunch of idiots on the internet so I won’t be reopening this thread and reading whatever other BS you have to say.

What’s wrong with Takoma ES?

I just came here to agree: GA Ave is dumpy as hell, and so is Brightwood. 16th street heights is nice, but boring as hell.

The redevelopment is a lot bigger than just a Whole Foods. But you're right that Georgia Ave has a long way to go because there isn't a single nice part of it. I still don't really understand why because not all the neighborhoods it runs through are sketchy, but somehow it is how it is.

Yeah, I think TES and Whittier are great! And Wells is shaping up well. I haven't heard good things about Coolidge but my kids are young.

FWIW, I live here and love the neighborhood. Georgia avenue is sketchy but one block away from it is nice (from everything ive seen).

I've lived in Petworth for 10 years and travel up and down Georgia frequently. Nothing has changed on Georgia, except the development at Walter Reed now. The lack of change is bizarre. So many empty storefronts. It's depressing.

I'm really excited about the development, especially since my kids will be going to DCI in a few years.

The dumpy part of brightwood is actually west of GA ave, in between Military Rd and Rittenhouse where all of the low income apartment buildings are. The duplexes in between coolidge and GA ave (which is either Brightwood or Manor Park depending on who you ask) are a mix of elderly people and young families and some are dumpy but not nearly as dumpy as the apartment buildings that are squarely in "Brightwood".
