You find Shepherd Park and Colonial Village super ugly? Wow. |
The schools are bad too, except for SP, but the new development is not zoned for that school. |
There are a lot of popular charters up in that area though |
Which ones? Because DCI is a middle/high school, which mostly only accepts students from its feeders. |
Breakthrough Montessori, Cap City, and DCI. DCB and LAMB (DCI feeders) aren't far. Washington Latin also isn't far. |
Have you seen their waitlist? These are not easy to get into. Hopefully, no one moves there expecting to attend them. |
I made this thread because I wanted other people’s opinions, not just my own. |
And? I didn't say I don't believe that someone who lives elsewhere would post this thread; someone does it every six months. I said that I don't believe someone who currently lives near Walter Reed would post this, and I still don't believe you live here. "It seems like things are looking up for that neighborhood and its surrounds" is not what someone who lives here, or even nearby, would say. |
I didn’t even mention Brightwood, genius. Here is what I wrote: “Im from the area too, and I don’t know why you guys act amazed. The main strip of Georgia from basically military up to silver spring was always very dumpy and Walter Reed is a major factor in changing that. Unless you drive back into the neighborhoods to see how lovely shepherd park / Takoma are, it still seems pretty dumpy to this day.” And the sole reason that I mentioned my “bona fides” is because the PP I was responding to mockingly said that I moved into the neighborhood 5 years ago, which is hilarious because again ai grew up here, so your little clap back that I must do that all the time is just all around dumb. Anyways, feel free to get the last word in because it’s too hot out to be bickering with a bunch of idiots on the internet so I won’t be reopening this thread and reading whatever other BS you have to say. |
What’s wrong with Takoma ES? |
| I just came here to agree: GA Ave is dumpy as hell, and so is Brightwood. 16th street heights is nice, but boring as hell. |
The redevelopment is a lot bigger than just a Whole Foods. But you're right that Georgia Ave has a long way to go because there isn't a single nice part of it. I still don't really understand why because not all the neighborhoods it runs through are sketchy, but somehow it is how it is. |
Yeah, I think TES and Whittier are great! And Wells is shaping up well. I haven't heard good things about Coolidge but my kids are young. FWIW, I live here and love the neighborhood. Georgia avenue is sketchy but one block away from it is nice (from everything ive seen). |

I've lived in Petworth for 10 years and travel up and down Georgia frequently. Nothing has changed on Georgia, except the development at Walter Reed now. The lack of change is bizarre. So many empty storefronts. It's depressing.
I'm really excited about the development, especially since my kids will be going to DCI in a few years. |
| The dumpy part of brightwood is actually west of GA ave, in between Military Rd and Rittenhouse where all of the low income apartment buildings are. The duplexes in between coolidge and GA ave (which is either Brightwood or Manor Park depending on who you ask) are a mix of elderly people and young families and some are dumpy but not nearly as dumpy as the apartment buildings that are squarely in "Brightwood". |
