| Any thoughts on the Parks development? The Whole Foods there had its grand opening today. New build townhouses, condos, and luxury apartments have been selling for a while now. There are also affordable housing options for seniors and veterans. Lots of construction is still going on, with retail space set aside in the area around the Whole Foods. It seems like things are looking up for that neighborhood and its surrounds. |
| Someone posts a variation on this every six months, and it makes less sense every time. There's nothing to guess at about "the future" of the development at this point. The neighborhood and its surrounds are not slums being salvaged by a Whole Foods, they're MC/UMC areas that will continue to be successful. |
+1 I used to live in Shepherd Park and I'm amazed every time I hear people talk about discovering it and how it's on the upswing. It's been a very nice UMC neighborhood for decades. |
Columbuses everywhere you look! |
Im from the area too, and I don’t know why you guys act amazed. The main strip of Georgia from basically military up to silver spring was always very dumpy and Walter Reed is a major factor in changing that. Unless you drive back into the neighborhoods to see how lovely shepherd park / Takoma are, it still seems pretty dumpy to this day. |
So stay away. |
Yes, I do. I take 16th instead as it’s a much prettier drive than dumpy Georgia Avenue. |
| I thought you meant Walter Reed in front of NIH, in Bethesda. They have a huge campus there. |
This response is pretty dramatic and assumes a lot. I live in the area which is why I made this thread. I didn't call the area around Georgia Avenue a "slum." You made that characterization and then chastised me for doing so. Strange. |
|
While Ga.Ave may appear to be dumpy, the immediate neighborhoods are not and never were to be honest. Takoma, Shepherd and Manor Park have always been nice neighborhoods with working class people. While shopping may have been limited move go to shop in DTSS or nearby PG county.
I say this as someone who parents sent them to Takoma instead of my IB school Whittier who frequented Pizza Hut (Ledos now) from receiving book it coupons. |
| I have been wondering what, if any, effect it will have. I live nearby too and PPs are right that Georgia is dumpy but the surrounding neighborhoods are mostly pretty nice. There is some dumpiness in Brightwood, but for the most part Georgia does not really match its surroundings. I am not sure what it will take to change that--perhaps Walter Reed is a start. |
What on earth? Brightwood is no more "dumpy" than Takoma or Manor Park, which is to say: not at all. In fact it has much larger and nicer SFHs and lots than Manor Park, although MP has its own charm. These threads are so ridiculous and always reveal that the "I live nearby too" people are people who moved to Brightwood Park 5 years ago after a realtor convinced them it was Petworth. |
I truly do not understand your anger toward me for creating a thread about the future of my own neighborhood. You have continued to lash out against a strawman in all your replies. |
No, it's revealing that you are unaware that Brightwood includes an area east of Georgia Ave and west of Coolidge HS, which does not have larger and nicer SFHs than Manor Park, and which has some streets that are somewhat dumpy. You seem to be taking offense and I am not sure why--I do live nearby (not in Brightwood Park), and it has not affected my love of the neighborhood. I am just sharing my observation. |
| Georgia Avenue is changing quickly with all the new 1-down-5-up apartments being built. It's starting north of Howard and I'm not sure how long it will take to reach Brightwood/Takoma, though. |
