No, that only probably applies to Virginia. It has 4 of the top 5 richest counties in the U.S but it barely makes the top 10. This tells us how much poorer the rest of the state is. VA is the only state with a very high wealth disparity. Maryland meanwhile has only one county in the top 10 but is ranked #1. That tells us the wealth is more balanced in MD. |
Uh, no. |
| How many states claim the status of “richest state”? |
Cambridge and Easton are not poor. People can’t stand that majority black communities are thriving. Obviously it will take generations for black peoples to gain the generational wealth that whites were handed in the 1900’s and earlier. Moco is thriving, jobs are plenty, housing is available, transportation is tolerable and schools are ranked top in the US. |
Yeah, you’re wrong about the eastern shore. I’m in Queens Anne County. There is a ton of money out here, you have to get off of 50 to know about it. |
Easton is incredibly wealthy. I feel poor when I walk around there! |
Howard County has always been the the richest county. It has NOTHING to do with MoCo declining because of socialist policies. Give me a break. It's because MoCo has always had vast wealth, but lots of poverty. HoCo doesn't. They don't have vast wealth, but they don't have large swaths of poverty either. They don't have the poverty to weigh it down. FYI - I'm from Ellicott City. The taxes are very high there. |
+1 Howard and Loudoun are very similar that way. |
Uh, yes |
Uh, maybe. |
| Maryland has a high median income. But it is not the wealthiest at least when measured with better metrics like net worth. |
| It’s because incomes are high in its urban/suburban areas and it has a very high proportion of urban/suburban area compared to other states. Most other states have a larger rural area proportion. MD’s Montgomery, PG, Howard and Anne Arundel Counties are all pretty wealthy. Baltimore, Harford, Frederick, Charles and St. Mary’s are probably also above average. So even with Washington and the Eastern Shore having low incomes, on average it’s going to be much higher than NY, CA, TX, VA which have more rural areas. |

People that live in Maryland are special. Just ask them. They would be happy to ‘splain it to you.
There is a whole world outside Maryland that will give you a better quality of life. |
| Sometimes these states make it to the top not because there’s a lot of wealth, but because there is simply a lack of poverty. High numbers of poverty bring down the HHI averages. States in the mid Atlantic/northeast have huge middle class and UMC populations. I’m in CA- lots of wealth, and LOTS of poverty. |
? MD has poverty. I lived in CA for 40 years, and my family started out as lower income. I've seen skid row. I've handed out meals to the homeless. I used to live 25min from Watts. You will never see a town like inner city Baltimore in CA. There is poverty, and then there is abject poverty. |
