My sense is schools have some leeway. If, say, the school has 15 kids who fit the traditional 85th percentile cut-off, they can choose 10/12 more who may show various other markers for success in CM and add them to the class. My son is wrapping up 5/6 and there were definitely kids added because of "parental advocacy" throughout the years, so I don't think the county controls this as much as they'd like to convey.



205 poster - no advocacy on our part, and I was surprised DS made it in. One factor might have been that the winter MAP was the lowest percentile-wise he had done so far (extenuating circumstances the week of the test might have contributed to that), and he seems to grasp the concepts quickly (but makes sloppy mistakes because he rushes thru his work). Likely enough kids at his school to fill a class based on the 85th percentile, but who knows…


That is true. We can guess but no one knows what the cutoff is


DP. The letter we received about CM says they used various data points, not just MAP. So it’s probably not the dealbreaker or maker.


Was the letter from the school or central MCPS?

In the past few years, it's been a bit of an obtuse deflection when central office (or schools utilizing central office language) say they use multiple data points. It's not been a sliding-scale heuristic, catching potential from many angles, but multiple hard cutoffs (even if the "hard" cutoff is different at different schools based on a FARMS-rate tranche). Since it's relatively easy to get an A grade (or set of A grades) or Above reading level, the MAP cutoff, or perhaps that for curricular assessment/MCAP/other standardized measure, becomes more of the litmus in their selection paradigms.

From the GT notification letter it seems the cut offs for enrichment/acceleration is 80th percentile in MAP scores. So its safe to assume that if the score is at 80th or above your child will be eligible for CM and ELC

In MCPS, GT ID, in general, has no bearing on CM or ELC placement. Schools have flexibility in identifying students for programs within the school, though, and a family always could use GT ID to advocate for placement if the (generally more restrictive) selection criteria for those curricula are not met.
