What enjoyment is there in outdoor movies? Help me understand why you’d want to be outside at night vs. indoors

October nights watching Harry Potter is nice.

I love being outside but the mosquitoes love me being outside even more. There are plenty of reasons I will coat every inch, including earlobes & forehead, to be outside but a movie isn't a reason for me. Maybe during the early fall id consider it.

I don't know anyone who has this setup at their home, but we go to outdoor movies a lot, including Cinema Del Ray every time it happens. It's a chance to socialize while the kids run around pre-movie. As a PP said, you can leave any time without feeling guilty, although I don't think we ever have. It's a fun novelty for my kids. I don't mind wearing bug spray. Fwiw, I hate both camping and the beach.

But here’s what, no one needs to “help you understand” things they enjoy that you don’t happen to enjoy. I don’t like “Game of Thrones” but no one needs to “help me understand” that it was a very popular show with a large and devoted audience. When did you miss the basic life lesson that different people like different things?

Some people want to know what’s appealing about things they feel they’d dislike.

And how could someone not like GoT? Help me understand that. It seems like you don’t enjoy popular tv shows or common phrases.

mostly rape scenes

I prefer being outside for any usual inside activity - eating, reading, drinking coffee in the morning, whatever. Doing an outdoor movie is such an easy thing for DCs and the neighborhood kids, much different than having them all in my house.

But I also like camping, so my perspective is different.

Where are you that the night air is crisp and cool over the summer? Not DC. It's heavy and thick here.

I’m in the mountain west. But I’m originally from the south, so yeah, you have a good point. The nights are glorious here.

In general, outdoor movies are for people who like to be outdoors. Do you ask for an outdoor table or always choose indoors? Do you take your book outside or prefer to be indoors?

My neighbor has this set-up, and I know she doesn't spray for mosquitoes... so I have to ask her what her system is, because our yard is full of mosquitoes in the summer!

Outdoor movie is terrible.

It was wonderful and dry Friday night in Fairfax Station

Sure, but it is still May. Local psychopaths are going to be out there watching movies in July!!

PP, you should write a post titled “Help me understand why someone would write a post asking for help understanding why other people like things they don’t like.”
The truth is sometimes someone will post a reason that the first person hadn’t considered and it might even make the person asking the question change their minds or view the activity in a different way.

Op here. This! Thank you PPs. I’m just seeking what is enjoyable because, hey, maybe there is some element that I am missing out on.

I love outdoor movies! Nice weather, sit on a blanket, bring your dinner and wine. It's awesome!

The mosquitoes make it too miserable for me to enjoy it, even when I coat myself in bug spray. They always get me.

But outdoor movies run in DC in July and August, when the weather is not nice, but incredibly humid and buggy. And people still go, for some reason?

Change of scenery is always fun. Novelty.

Summer nights can be breezy and comfortable.

More people can enjoy the experience in an outdoor setting than in the average sized home.

It’s social - meet new people.

Fun around a pool!

Excuse to get friends together and eat and entertain.

Bigger screen than most tvs.

All that said, I’m an introvert and prefer watching movies tucked into my comfortable bed. I would have enjoyed it more as a kid or college student.

Not good climate control. Too many mosquitos. I don’t like bug spray. The sound isn’t as good.
