What enjoyment is there in outdoor movies? Help me understand why you’d want to be outside at night vs. indoors

Backyard home theatre setups seem to be very common around here now that the weather is warming up. I suppose I am not outdoorsy enough but I would be absolutely miserable with the mosquitos, bugs, and heat.

What makes this enjoyable to you?

Honest question. Is it just having fresh air vs. air conditioner? Something else?

I'm interested too--I see parks who host movie nights in the summer and wonder why? Who goes to these? They don't start until dark which is way past my bedtime, so maybe that's why I don't get the appeal. You can't see anything if it's too light. I like the idea of a drive in movie, but have the same issue in terms of them starting too late because that's when it gets dark.

I hate these too!

I think it’s the novelty that is exciting for children, the ability to run around in the dark, etc. For adults I think it feels “healthier” to be outdoors amongst plants, a pool and pricey garden furniture. It’s more hip and less down market than staring at a television on a couch or being closeted in a movie theater. They also have more latitude to move about more.

I love these and went to one yesterday. It’s just different so we think it’s fun. We pack a picnic and eat on a picnic blanket. My kids are little and we often have picnics at playgrounds.

You go to bed before dark?

It's nostalgia for me. I did it with my parents

Because you just watched TV indoors all winter?

GTFOOTH.

Its an excuse to be outside, let kids run around, invite over other adults for drinks & food, etc.

I did it a lot when I lived in nyc, where we all had tiny sh#tty apartments. You haven’t lived until you’ve danced to the HBO theme song from the 80s

No one needs to “help you understand” anything. I’m not a fan of outdoor movies per se, except for a truly 1950s drive-in near my Midwestern hometown, which is fully renovated but true to its retro roots. That’s pretty cool.

But here’s what, no one needs to “help you understand” things they enjoy that you don’t happen to enjoy. I don’t like “Game of Thrones” but no one needs to “help me understand” that it was a very popular show with a large and devoted audience. When did you miss the basic life lesson that different people like different things?

It works when it's a pleasant cool night. You don't have to worry about spilled popcorn or snacks and there's something to be said for communal (large group , for example, too big or wild to fit in your livingvto watch a movie) watching a movie outside.

It's typically paired with a fire pit for smores. Again, outdoor feature(s).

It's easier to host a group outside where there is room for the kids to run around. The kids love the novelty of it. Saves wear and tear on the house. All upsides.

Some people want to know what’s appealing about things they feel they’d dislike.

And how could someone not like GoT? Help me understand that. It seems like you don’t enjoy popular tv shows or common phrases.

If you, or OP, can’t take five seconds to think through why other people like something, then you need professional help. Like I said, I don’t like GOT, but off the top of my head, I can understand that people like:
Beautiful and interesting costumes and hairstyles
High-stakes, life-and-death drama
Beautiful actors and actresses naked and/or scantily clad

I don’t like Jason Momoa. He’s not my type. But because I’m not an idiot, I grasp that other people find buckets o’ muscles appealing.

It’s really not that hard. Pretend you had to write a three-paragraph paper about why people like outdoor movies. Bet you could do it.

Just being outside is pleasant. Logistically with a 3 year old I don't make it to a lot of them with start times at like 8:30-9, but I certainly get the appeal.

It’s fun when it’s with a large group of friends with kids.
