Last minute summer European vacation?

Anonymous
We are going to Iceland in early July. I just bought the tickets two weeks ago, so definitely last minute. I was able to get lodging and a 4x4 pretty easily, even though “everyone’” (not dcum but other online groups) says Iceland is fully boooked for the summer 🙄

This is good to hear. Multiple locations or just one?

Multiple locations - we are going for two weeks so we are doing the whole ring road plus westfjords! Had no issues getting lodging, but it is just my husband and I - rooms for families might be more difficult to get at this point.

Do you like planning or do you want to just go? If latter, what about a cruise? Good for teens and you won’t have to plan much.

I'd go where I find the best airfare. But if options are wide open, what about Romania? Seriously overlooked. Transylvania is wonderful and the Carpathian mountains charming.

Leaving for France next week. Will Paris be especially crowded?

From our experience in Iceland, three is the max in a room. we had 2 rooms in every hotel we stayed in.

I believe you. It’s back to 2019 levels in terms of hotel stays and 2019 was an absolute horror show. We’re going to Greece in the beginning of June, so when European kids are still in school and am keeping my fingers crossed that it’s not too crowded.

I wish fewer overseas tourists would go to Europe for vacation. There’s so much over tourism there, it ruins the cities for locals. My friend could barely get out of her front door during Xmas season 2019, and now it’s back to the same levels. It’s really bad for the environment too.

Hiking in the Tatra mountains would be fun.

If you only hit the major tourist attractions yes it will seem crowded. If you spread out a bit more, don't stay right in the center of the city, go to sites that are a bit less "trendy", do things like go to museums during night hours, etc, it will be fine.

For example, I would suggest you go to places in July where a lot of European’s may vacation in August.

- Renting a villa along, the Tuscan coast would be good and centrally located.
- or try Begur in Spain; drive to Andorra; then France (fly out of Montpelier)
- SW French coast through Provence (villa st Ange in Aix has avail; or château les Merles in Dordogne or La Signoria's Family Suites/Villas in Corsica)

- no to Greece/Sicily/Amalfi/puglia etc.

If you are not wed to staying in only one place, you will have a lot more options. And also suggest flying into one city & out of the other.

We are all travel arm chair quarterbacks, and probably would love the opportunity to find you lodging for your family of five if you give us an idea of locations! And the types of accommodations, you typically travel in.

Btw

Just got this email from a villa company I regularly use for rentals along the Tuscan coast (we typically fly into Rome, pick up rental car, drive up coast for 1.5 to 2 hours):

We still have some availability this summer in a small cottage sleeping up to 6 people in three bedrooms, three bathrooms near Porto Santo Stefano and in one or two larger villas with cooks sleeping 10 to 12 guests near Porto Ercole.
