Yo, what up Ward 6 dad in his 40’s here. Charles Allen does a good job with sort of admin tasks, and is responsive, but over the years I’ve seen him rely on (selective) “evidence based” science when he helps implement policy. I mean the youth rehab act, second look act, his support of the overturned crime bill that would have allowed for jury trials that would overburden the court system (even if new staff was hired as suggested). He also seems to enjoy blaming external factors rather than the perpetrators of crime. Whether it was him blaming the city for not cleaning up leaves quickly enough last fall, which basically left “an attractive nuisance” that poor unsuspecting teens couldn’t help but light on fire under cars.
Or when he voiced meekness about the stabbing at Potomac metro. He basically doubles down on clearly failing progressive criminal justice reform policies. Like how are those violence interruptors doing? You know the ones that cost the city $9m? The whole city is fked. Whether it’s a USAO who won’t prosecute or a city council who is so bleeding heart woke they can’t imagine imposing strict and swift punishment for crime. How’s that CVS up in NW? You know the one NPR profiled? How are we going to do after the $500million budget shortfall from the loss of property tax revenues? I mean we just sit idly by watching crime happen because everyone is too scared to offend anyone by arresting and prosecuting criminals. Oh, that’s right I’m sorry, the crime wave isn’t happening and I’m just regurgitating Fox News talking points. Don’t believe your eyes and ears. All is well. Charles Allen and the other council members are doing great. I wish we could get Congress to implement a criminal control board. Jeff, I know your political leanings based on reading this forum. No need to chastise me. |
+100 Time to get out of DC. I've been here since 2003, but I'm exhausted by the loony left here that never hesitates to make excuses for violent criminals. |
Well, we’ve heard from the NPC voter block. Anyone else? |
Yeah, WAMU has become an unreliable narrator. |
100% cosigned, fellow Ward 6 parent in my 40s. And I'm a liberal, like 95% of all people in DC. DC is starting to feel like a parody of what someone like Tucker Carlson thinks a liberal, coastal city is like. We've handcuffed ourselves to ideals that ignore the reality of running a city of 700,000 people. It's actually okay to prosecute crime. The victims of crimes are also deserving of our support and assistance. Some might even say the victims of crime are MORE deserving of our support and assistance than the people committing violent crimes. |
NP. Hi Jeff. You created a post - maybe 6 months or a year back - about the federal government’s role in prosecuting crimes in DC, and how we can’t place the blame on Charles Allen. Maybe you could bolster your views on the topic by bumping the thread you created? NOTE: I am not taking a position on Allen; I am not even a DC voter anymore. It’s just that your old thread came to mind. Personally, I blame the council and the mayor for the current crime crisis. |
The voice of a man who does not care how many women are raped or people or murdered if it conflicts with his ideological priors. |
Yes, thank you! For me, it was meaningful that the D.C. police union pointed their finger at Charles Allen: https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/dc-police-union-ad-blames-2-council-members-for-crime-increase/3025426/ I think we would love for Charles Allen to wake up, make a mea culpa and start taking crime seriously. I honestly hope he reads here and sees how unhappy his constituents are. |
| FYI a man arrested Sunday for machete attack on H Street was no papered and released this morning, so don’t think the guy running toward your kids when they’re trick or treating tonight is just showing off his pirate costume. |
Wait what happened? I can't keep up. Link to an article? |

DP nevermind, found it, and apparently the machete suspect had an outstanding bench warrant entered just 5 days prior on 10/24, machete incident happened 10/29 and somehow the court still released him. |

Allen's office is only responsive if they like what you are asking them to respond to. If not, they'll "look into it" and then radio silence.
Ward 6 voter who never voted for him and isn't going to start anytime soon. Maybe when the H Street crime creeps down into his block he will finally take things seriously. |
Yes, but as Councilmember Allen's staff member told me, prison causes irreparable harm. Clearly more harm than getting injured or killed by a machete. |
The only reason people like Charles Allen get elected is because, in DC, the only elections that really matter are primaries and hardly anyone votes in them. By the time the general election rolls around, it's Charles Allen (or whoever won the primary) versus a ham sandwich. The 25,000 votes Allen gets in a general election is a misleading indication of how many people support him because, at that point in the process, there is no viable alternative. The number of people who actively support him is far smaller (and far less representative of the ward). That's how you end up with these wacko birds on city council. |
