Langley High - No AP Classes for Freshmen?

Anonymous
1. College Admissions officers will not “ding” a srudent for not taking an AP class freshman year, if the SCHOOL DOES NOT OFFER IT TO FRESHMEN!
2. Let the kids be kids and encourage them get involved in student life on campus. They might end up finding another passion. Try out electives, newspaper, yearbook, student government, photography.

Here is the actual reason that Langley cannot offer AP CS to freshmen.

STAFF.

They cannot find enough staff to teach STEM classes. The new STEM Design staff this year are not that great.

There is a group large number of juniors who took regular CS freshman year, AP CS sophomore year and now in only post-AP CS class. These students do not have a CS class available for senior year. This is a source of shame that these interested students have no CS class.

If the Langley High School wants to offer AP CS to freshmen, they would then be stuck with students with no CS class for two years since they only have one post-AP CS class right now.

FCPS needs to rethink how they offer CS classes and other advanced classes. They should expand the online campus and have some of the amazing teachers at TJ be available to any student who would like to take the class.

name one class offered at Langley that is not offered at other schools

I did. I was a freshman in 2000-2001. AP World History. To mandate it is stupid, but to offer it to qualified students isn't.

Staffing issues. The principal runs the good teachers out with her “agenda”

What exactly are you insinuating is her “agenda”? We’ll wait.

At our FCPS HS, you are supposed to have Geometry before taking AP Com Sci A. But, if you have coding experience and you are a math-y kid (i.e. honors), you can get permission to take AP Com Sci A as a 9th grader.

In Arlington, many 9th graders take AP World History. In FCPS, 9th graders never take AP World Hist.

So, wait. In 9th grade you are already either a coder or non-coder? And if at age 14, you are a non-coder you should be brought into the computer science world via an AP class?

My poor, poor children.

Thanks for your completely unsubstantiated opinion based on zero facts.

They offer AP Comp Sci Principles at LBSS. My freshman is taking it because they really enjoy computer classes and want to take the courses that have it as a prerequisite in the next years. It’s not to show off for colleges. It’s because they want to work in computers and it comes naturally. Otherwise, they are a pretty regular FCPS kid- but the A in AP Comp Sci P makes them feel good.

Don’t worry. This is common. And admissions officers understand, and respect, the reasons to limit 9th graders from AP. It’s often the best high schools that do this!!

Go away. We came to Fairfax for the schools and opportunities. What someone else does should not concern you and the only reason it does is that it may make you and your kid look bad by comparison (which is why you referred to it as a competition). Let those who are self-driven and motivated do their thing. Stop benchmarking yourself to others and focus on yourself.
