Longfellow is below capacity. It got a sizable expansion @2012, larger than what Cooper is getting now. |
Langley kids can’t just walk around downtown McLean after school because you can’t walk anywhere after school. They do indeed hang out at friends’ houses, often my house. |
You’ll usually see more McLean kids walking to and from school or in the central McLean area. Langley area is less walkable and kids seem to make a beeline to the big parking lot. |
You can't walk to downtown McLean from Langley because there are no sidewalks on Dolley Madison and it is a bit far. You can walk from Langley to Waverly but once you get to Dolley Madison, there are no sidewalks. That being said, most students like to hangout at Langley after school because everything is so nice there, from the school to the sports facilities. Most Kids at McLean HS don't like to hangout at school because the school is an absolute dump. Why hang out at the school when you can hang out at Santini, Starbucks, Chopx, etc... |
I really don't care if my kids can walk downtown after school. There's not much in downtown McLean anyway. They can still hang out with other kids in our neighborhood. |
I wish that were true. The Langley administration doesn’t trust the kids and makes the kids feel unwelcome if they are just hanging out at the school after hours. |
I don't know what you're talking about. I run along Georgetown Pike from Dolley Madison to Cooper MS and back between 4pm and 5:30pm everyday, and the parking lot at Langley HS always has a lot of cars around that time. There are also a lot of after school activities. |
They won’t let the kids take their backpacks to class but there isn’t enough time to get to lockers between classes. The crowding situation in the stairwell is dangerous. |
My kids attended LFMS in 2015, 2016, 2018 and soon to be 2023. The school was already crowded since 2016 and it is much worse now. If you think it is bad at LFMS, it is a lot worse at McLean HS. |
I believe that officially Longfellow is just at/right around capacity. I agree that between classes this is hard to believe -- it is insanely crowded. McLean is overcapacity AND in terrible condition, but the teachers are very good. If I had to choose based on the school, I would choose Cooper-Langley. Actually, I'd probably choose Falls Church City |
Longfellow received an expansion around 2012 based on the assumption that 1/2 the AAP kids from Cooper would continue going there. Then the AAP kids from the Langley pyramid got moved from both Kilmer and Longfellow to Cooper, and there was a later boundary change with Cooper. As a result, the Longfellow has been trending down: 2022: 1243 2021: 1267 2020: 1336 2019: 1334 2018: 1319 2017: 1362 2016: 1346 2015: 1342 2014: 1393 2013: 1332 It still has a lot of kids, of course, because it has an excellent reputation and people are attracted to the pyramid. But it has fewer kids now than at any other time over the past decade. |
Langley HS is recently rebuilt and slightly under capacity. McLean HS desperately needs a complete rebuilding but is at the bottom of the FCPS priority list. Even the bathrooms do not work at McLean HS. Demographics and test results are similar. Course offerings are pretty similar, Nearly all grads go to college at both HSs.
So I would choose the Langley pyramid - at least the kids have working bathrooms there. |
Yeah, thanks. We still prefer McLean. It’s always been more diverse and a little less “Type A.” And it appears there may be a new renovation queue issued within the next year or so and McLean could be fairly high on the next queue. |
NP. McLean is overcrowded now. It may change if it gets renovated later on. But Langley is renovated now. |
Complete BS. People have been talking about renovating McLean HS for the past ten years and nothing has changed. |
