Boundary study - BCC

Anonymous
Woodward will primarily pull from WJ, but they are using this opportunity to look holistically at all the clusters to help balance utilization and diversity. I suspect in doing so some kids from BCC may move to Whitman and some kids in Whitman may move to WJ or Woodward. BCC kids are not going to end up at Woodward -- it's too far away. That said, walkers are almost always exempt from boundary studies, so buy a house walking distance to the high school (i.e., in East Bethesda) and you'll be fine.

Do you think some BCC families will end up at Einstein? Some neighborhoods are in fact very close to Einstein. And the school has a good reputation, just not the cachet.

NP here, I doubt it. Geographically that shift would have to draw from the east side of the BCC zone, which is the more diverse (both in terms of race/ethnicity and socio-economic status.) That would make BCC less diverse overall, and it would mess with the new middle school, which had its own bruising boundary battle a few years ago.

No, not walking distance to the high school. What you would want is in the walk zone of the high school.

Move to Silver Spring. They definitely won’t move that area out of BCC because it adds diversity to the school.

+1. The Rosemary Hills and Rock Creek Forest areas are a safe bet to remain assigned to BCC.

It's possible the northern part of BCC's boundary is much closer to Einstein.

It probably also doesn't hurt that the area is closer to BCC than any other school.

But that north part of the boundary is right where the county just built Silver Creek Middle school, which is part of the BCC cluster. The county was all about making sure the kids in that neighborhood got to walk to middle school. I would find it bizarre if they pulled SCMS out of the BCC cluster only a few years after bringing it online. And pulling just the Kensington kids over to Einstein while the CCES/NCC/RCF kids go to BCC would be highly unusual.

It’s a shame MCPS divested itself of the Leland Junior High property in downtown Bethesda which was highly walkable. Didn’t planners in the 80s realize that growth comes in cycles and that with all the development planned near Metro that the school population would bounce back up? It was an attractive school building too. What a waste to just tear it down.

You’re right. With the brand new SCMS I doubt that portion of Kensington would move to Einstein

I was on the site selection committee for the new middle school and the former Leland site was tiny compared to current recommendations.

They would still be able to walk to middle school, even if the area were reassigned from B-CC to a different high school. A high school boundary change, by itself, doesn't change the middle school assignment. Plus a split articulation for a middle school is not at all unusual in MCPS.

The southern part of Bradley Hills is just a few blocks from Whitman.
