Boundary study - BCC

Anonymous
Does anyone have an idea of which neighborhoods may get moved out of BCC? We are currently in bounds for BCC and thinking about moving within the catchment - but don't want to end up inadvertently separating our kids from their classmates/friends.

No. Nobody does. Including people who say they do.

Safe bet if you live closer to Woodward or another HS than BCC you may end up there.

Just a guess, but I would try to stay south of Jones Bridge Road.

Areas that get bus service to BCC may be rezoned. Areas within the MCPS-designated walk zone to BCC are very unlikely to be rezoned.

I suspect that those who are bused from the east side of the school (in the RHES/NCC catchment) won't get zoned out.

I would suggest the neighborhoods/areas that are on the border of Chevy Chase/SS won't get re-zoned because BCC would lose it's much needed diversity.

Isn't SS more diverse than CC?

Most of BCC cluster's diversity is a few meters/less than 1 mile from the Chevy Chase border with Silver Spring. It's all the same neighborhood. Temple Shalom is in Chevy Chase. The houses next door are already Silver Spring.

Yes, but not the area adjacent to CC which is a short distance to BCC. Nevertheless, reducing transit costs, and dealing with utilization, are also important.

Agree. They are not going to make the school less diverse. This is the current BCC boundary: https://www.mocorealestate.com/maps/bethesda-chevy-chase-cluster/

I think if anyone is moved out of BCC, it'll be in the Western side of the boundary, particularly the western areas that are farther north.

MCPS/BoE really, really need to start expecting high school students to use public transit where it's available. All the RideOn and Metrobus routes already in the area, plus the Metro, plus the Purple Line which is supposed to open in fall 2026.

That is what DCPS does - they offer free public transit during school hours. It also lets them start school at a reasonable hour.

There already is Kids Ride Free on RideOn and Metrobus in Montgomery County.

We'll start to see the options they're developing sometime in 2024, and then the superintendent's recommendation will be released in February 2025. But for now, everything is speculation.
