Boundary study - BCC

As far as I can tell, all of Martin's Additions is within the walking distance (<2.0 miles) of BCC. Your best best for staying at BCC is to get MCPS to remove bus service and reassign you to the BCC walk zone.

You need to be in some odd addition to an existing boundary where you are closer to another HS or on its outer edge to get rezoned. Of course, a lot of overcrowded students at Einstein and WJ will end up at Woodward. What they're not going to do is bus people across the county.

Interesting. So the Einstein boundaries will likely move further south and east?

Don't know but I would expect them to contract, particularly on the side facing Woodward.

+1, Einstein is so overcrowded that I can’t see expansion of their existing boundaries. In order to take the kids from Kensington that go to either BCC or WJ Einstein would have to have multiple current feeders re-zoned elsewhere (Woodlin, Flora Singer and/or Highland). Maybe there’s a world in which that happens, but it would involve a lot of shuffling.

Yes. And keep in mind the relative sizes of each of these HS buildings, once all the construction is done. B-CC is built for almost 900 more students than Einstein.

Blair 2867
B-CC 2475
WJ 2291
Northwood 2260
Wheaton 2237
Whitman 2231
Woodward 2159
Kennedy 2159
Einstein 1602

This makes sense. Only a holistic county wide approach to redrawing boundaries would provide some more flexibility re Einstein’s and other DCC schools’ boundaries. This boundary change is limited in scope to address the new Woodward and overcrowding at Einstein et al.

The boundary study is supposed to include Whitman, WJ, B-CC, Einstein, Northwood, Kennedy, Blair, and Wheaton. I don't consider that "limited in scope."

I think it's so hard because you either need take the wealthier kids (Woodlin) out of Einstein and to BCC/Woodward, which increases segregation, or bus low-income kids (Highland) to Woodward, which makes their lives harder especially if they are responsible for caring for younger siblings.

Let’s also be real, if Highland got re-zoned to either Woodward or Wheaton (assuming Wheaton feeders are moved to Woodward) and the entirety of Kensington was zoned to Einstein it would look like a completely different high school demographically.

It would be better to move Highland to Wheaton, and move Viers Mill ES to Woodward.

It would make Einstein look more like BCC from a demographics standpoint. But it would also further imbalance the makeup of Wheaton HS, which already is majority Hispanic even without adding heavily Hispanic Highland ES as a feeder.

If you move Viers Mill from Wheaton to Woodward and Highland to Wheaton that would seem to keep things pretty much the same at Wheaton, since Viers Mill and Highland are pretty similar demographically, no? It's not ideal in that you're not addressing segregation at Wheaton, that is true. But it doesn't seem like it would make things worse.

That is true. But then that also keeps Wheaton about the same amount overcapacity (~400), so they probably need to rezone still another Wheaton feeder to Woodward or elsewhere. Maybe Wheaton Woods.
