This is a great point, OP. That it could have been the cleaners. |
| Contact your credit card company and dispute the charge with them, Airbnb, BBB and State Attorney General's Office. |
| If there was an insurance charge for the reservation, then why would OP be on the hook for the broken stove? |
| I went through something like this and it still gives me anxiety to stay at an Airbnb to this day. I wish I didn’t have to but we have a toddler and it’s tough to stay at a hotel. Now I take photos of everything before we leave. |
| OP, usually what happens is the guest says “I didn’t do that - I’m not paying you” and the host is s**t out of luck. Airbnb is pretty terrible for hosts. |
What happened? Did you have to pay for the damages? |
I broke my glass cooktop a few years ago (dropped a very heavy wooden cutting board on it days before Christmas) and a replacement was no longer available because the range was ten or so years old, so I had to get a new stove. |

We had a cracked stove incident in our old apartment. We woke up one morning to a shattered stovetop. Huge crack across the top. It had not been like that when we went to bed, it appeared overnight. I can only conclude that there was a tiny crack formed that we didn’t notice when cooking that night and it spread dramatically while we slept.
The only reason I mention this is because it could be that something similar happened here and the owner is not just outright lying or accusing. Either way, in your case I would still maintain that it was fine when you left. As others have said, it could have been the cleaners. There is no way to really know. Insurance should address it. Not you. (In our case we had to pay for a new stove for our apartment and that really annoyed me at the time because landlords buy these cheap freaking appliances and then act outraged when they break with normal use. But that part is not relevant to your story!!) |
Thank you!! I think this is a likely scenario. Yes - cheap appliances and then they are outraged when it breaks with normal use. As I said, I have had a glass top stove at home for years, it gets used hard, and never ever any issues even when I do not use it in ideal ways. |
