Can I come home with you for dinner?

My mom made an excellent cheese/spinach souffle. One of my very favorite memories is how on souffle day, my dad would relax the house rules and let my pet parrot sit at the table with us, because souffle was the parrot's favorite food, too. No one could resist the happy little clicks and whistles he made when you gave him his spinach souffle... He would do his little foot-stompy dance of joy... I'm tearing up. Weird food association, I know.

pierogies
stuffed cabbage
homemade cream puffs
Maryland blue crabs
chicken and dumplings
white bread used to sop up the grease from the big fat steaks my mom would broil - sounds so gross now, but we fought over that piece of bread!

We used to dip the bread in the grease as well. I do it once in a while now, but I dip it in bacon grease. Soooo good! and I also had the pierogies & stuffed cabbage. This is motivating me to try to make the dough for pierogies. It never tastes the same as my mom.

- Whole milk left out in glass bottles on our porch at dawn: the bluetits would peck at the aluminium top and drink it before we did.

Sounds lovely. I have such fond memories of the food I grew up with. My mom was an amazing cook:

Spicy masala omelettes
Chicken Biryani with cucumber raita
Curried spinach with beef
Semiya (dessert made with vermicilli, sugar, milk, and spices)
and always a good cup of strong tea

This made me drool...though I'm more of a kheer girl myself, and I'd have to add rajma to that list! Did your masala omelettes have green chiles and onions, too??

jello salads - apricot jello salad, 7-Up salad, cranberry salad (jello was HUGE in the 70's)

iced tea at nearly every meal

I really miss sitting around the supper table with my family every night. Saying the blessing before supper without fail. I need to do a better job of doing this with my own family. I think it's sooo important in making kids loved and part of something bigger than themselves.

My list continues...
pork chops and gravy
yellow squash fried in cornmeal
fresh green beans out of the garden (we called them 'snaps')
homegrown tomatoes
black-eyed peas
October beans with chow-chow (a type of relish, kind of like salsa)
strawberry pie with whipped cream
German chocolate cake

Man, I miss my mama. You can tell I'm southern, right?
