Foods you grew up with...

Chicken nuggets
Mac N cheese
Pizza
Happy Meals

Our parents and grand parents had the same amount of time in a day to make those good things, reading this thread gets me motivated to make better food instead of taking the easy way out every so often

I'm the 16:55 poster. One of my items was from a local carryout. Another from a downtown restaurant. And a third is super-processed. My mother didn't work full time, so she did have more time to make these things than I do M-F, but we also ate out regularly. I have fond memories of both, but the food made with love at home is more prominent in my memories b/c it can't be duplicated easily, not even by me with their recipes.

We make a point of taking our child to real restaurants more often than fast food. She thinks my grilled cheese is better than her favorite restaurant's (although it is close). And I'm hoping, hoping, hoping that she'll learn to appreciate home cooked food more than fast food or frozen. And that she'll love to cook, too.

- Sushi made with ham and gruyere because my Japanese Dad could not find sashimi grade fish years ago in Paris
- tea with cucumber sandwiches and scones at boarding school in Scotland
- Whole milk left out in glass bottles on our porch at dawn: the bluetits would peck at the aluminium top and drink it before we did.

OOoohhh, how you took me back. The downtown bakery - after church they'd sell hot loaves of Italian bread right out the kitchen door. My sister and I would start nibbling as soon as my mother got it back to the car.

My Mama's homemade vegetable soup and cast-iron skillet cornbread on a cold day
skillet fried chicken
pepper steak over rice
Grandma's baked beans
meatloaf and mashed potatoes
chicken casserole
lemon lush dessert
homemade light rolls
macaroni salad
jello salads - apricot jello salad, 7-Up salad, cranberry salad (jello was HUGE in the 70's)
sugar cookies at Christmas
iced tea at nearly every meal

I really miss sitting around the supper table with my family every night. Saying the blessing before supper without fail. I need to do a better job of doing this with my own family. I think it's sooo important in making kids loved and part of something bigger than themselves.

Mmmm, good skillet fried chicken is hard to find. Doesn't seem like it should be that hard, but getting it just right is a skill.
