Because that will lower his cholesterol.

You can add some milk and a little brown sugar or maple syrup. Or, mix it with applesauce. You can also add raisins or other dried fruit, or even fruit in general (ie: chopped or thinly cut apples, blueberries, etc).

I'm surprised no one's mentioned muesli.

This is a really basic recipe: http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/muesli/Detail.aspx. (I'd leave out the brown sugar.)

I sometimes add the milk before I go to bed and it's like cold prepared oatmeal in the morning. It's nice on warm mornings - more filling than cereal, but cold.

Serve it to him naked.

LOL - naked!

I do bananas and blueberries (TONS of them). Plus organic brown sugar and REAL maple syrup (we like grade b).

I have grown to love oatmeal lately but was also looking for a way not to muck it up with added sugar. My best tricks are:

1) I buy frozen blueberries and let them defrost in a container in the fridge. A sweet juice oozes out. I throw the berries and the juice into the oatmeal pot. (Or if I use the quick cook, I dump the hot water over the oats and berries).

2) sugar free jam or preserves

3) vanilla protein powder. It is tasty, and it is always good to mix protein and carbs together at breakfast.

Are you sarcastically saying chocolate chips will raise his cholesterol? You could also use cocoa powder. The point is to eat more oatmeal. This version will make anyone an oatmeal fan!

We used to eat this all the time before kids. Recipe sounds yummy. Thanks! (not OP) It's way cheaper to make your own and you can customize it to your tastes. Oats and wheat germ and nuts are SO good for you, walnuts are especially good for the heart OP, in moderation of course.

I make mine with milk. It makes it nice and creamy.

Steel cuts oats is a must and try sweetening with agave. It's low glycemic, so it won't make matters worse. When you first mix it in, the oatmeal will seems soupy. But after you mix for a minute or so the agave sort of soaks right in and the oatmeal will thicken up again just like you never added anything. It really is a good alternative to suger/maple syrup/honey. Also, try reading this article, I used it to bring DH's cholesterol and blood pressure way down.
