Making old fashioned oatmeal taste good

Anonymous
DH has high cholesterol and he's going to start eating oatmeal for breakfast, but I read not to do instant flavored oatmeal but the old-fashioned kind.

What kind of stuff do I put IN it to make it taste good?

We are obviously not oatmeal eaters...but are going to be shortly.

thanks.

First use steel cut oats. Takes more time, so throw it in the slow cooker the night before. Alton Brown has a tasty recipe for oatmeal on foodnetwork.

Also put this in the food forum.

A little maple syrup is delicious.

Raisins

Cinnamon

Cardamom, if you're feeling fancy

Apple sauce

Nuts

Other dried fruit

Cook it with milk instead of water for extra protein and richness.

I love oatmeal! I just add a little whole milk for my toddler, and sometimes she will let me add fruit (other times she is horrified by the addition of fruit and wants the fruit separate).

For me, I have done a little sunflower butter or almond butter (taste very similar to peanut butter but are healthier for the heart). Just scoop on a knife and mix in.

I've also done raisins and craisins, and a little brown sugar is delicious. Bananas, honey, blueberries. Tons of stuff. You could even add a little plain sugar - it's still less than what you would get from cereal with added sugar.

Get Trader Joe's fast-cooking steel cut oatmeal. Cooks in 8 minutes. We add a tiny bit of butter (you could skip this step), a pinch of salt, and maple syrup---much less sugar than you'd get in a pre-sweetened variety. Very tasty.

Or maybe try adding a really good unsweetened applesauce? Whole Foods has an exceptionally sweet jarred applesauce that my kids love. I think it's called Santa Cruz.

I use steel cut oats (trader joe's has the kind that cook quicker than usual), use an apple juice-water combination to cook them in, use lots of cinnamon, and slice in a half banana near the end. I also toss in some roasted flax seeds for an added nutty flavor. SO good. This morning i tossed in some fresh blueberries at the end.

I like brown sugar and/or pureed fruit in my oatmeal. Berries of all sorts are delicious in oatmeal!

I do mine in the slow cooker overnight but make it a double boiler of sorts. I put a pyrex or other glass dish in the crock. I put the oats and water, milk or juice in the small dish and fill the crock with enough water to come about 2/3/ way up the side of the inner dish. Sometimes I add dried fruit, applesauce or flaxseed. I tried just putting it in the crock put and it burned every time.

Make "turtle" oatmeal--pecans or walnuts, chocolate chips and a little brown sugar. DH and I used to eat this for dinner sometimes before we had kids.

Steel cut oats are great with chopped walnuts, a bit of honey, and salt. They do take awhile to cook so I make up a batch on the weekend with enough to last all week.

Old fashioned oats, I make with milk instead of water and add sugar. Total comfort food!
