| With me? Yes. And I'm very strict about not allowing him to drink here. But I use the law as an excuse. If he wants to learn to drink responsibly where it's legal, fine. |
| Yes, I would. And did. We were in Germany this summer and DH and I were trying all these awesome beers- DS (17) asked if he could order one and we said sure, why not. He ended up hating the taste, though. |
| Yes of course. |
| Another yes of course. |

Curious -- for those of you who meet OP's stipulations and WOULD allow a kid to have a glass of wine in France, would you NOT allow the same kid to have a glass of wine with dinner at home?
What makes France different? |
This is what I don’t understand (full disclosure I was asking this question on another thread, but am not the OP of this one). What is the difference between your 18 yr old having a glass of wine at a cafe in Paris and your 18 yr old having a glass of wine at your home in Herndon, VA. Both are legal, both are wine. Why do people allow one and not the other? |
Depending on where you live, it is probably legal for your under 21 yr old to drink alcohol at home with your permission. Better hope he doesn’t google the law and call you out! |
| We did let DS have one glass (wine or beer) at dinner while abroad, and/but, he is a college student. We did not allow younger sibling, a HS student, to have an alcoholic drink at dinner. |
For my family it’s simply because it’s legal there, and it is not legal here. |
If you live in VA or MD it is legal. DC has no exceptions. |
Why does that matter? It would be 100% a victimless crime. |
It matters to me. Why would it matter to you if it matters to me? Who cares? Lol. I’m just answering the OP and give them my reason. Every family is different with different rules. That’s what I’ve been telling my kids since they were little toddlers. |
Dp. But if it is legal where you live, then what is your reasoning? |
I’m OP. I will allow it overseas but not in my home. I don’t see a reason to do it while at home. (I didn’t do it growing up and rarely drink now, so telling me that it teaches moderation isn’t persuasive to me. I think kids who go wild in college or as young adults, would have notwithstanding under 21, occasional legal drinking sanctioned by parents. |
Because one is about an experience and the other is about drinking for the sake of drinking. |
