I kept asking DC whether to continue with Basis and the answer is always positive. DC likes his new friends/classmates and teachers. I am a bit dumbfounded regarding how the perceived reality being so different from the opinions here.

No need to be dumbfounded. Basis trolls and sock puppeting. More than once. No one believes any of the threads or positive posts are real or in good faith.

How about negative posts? My kid loves Basis eventhough review here is so bad. Day and night difference!!

So happy for you. Congratulations.

Another parent of a happy student here, but in a lower grade. The Basis marketing troll posts aren’t any worse than the toxicity of parents trying to beat down a relative newcomer that is doing well, and keep climbing both in rankings and enrollment the past 2 years. Let’s see how things look for the 2023 - 2024 year. Hope the haters enjoy being such such tough keyboard warriors and clever bullies.

Oh, but they are worse. People aren’t allowed to do that. Also, it ruins it for any valid Basis poster because now the school has a rep for fake posters. That’s not honest. Calling posters out for their BS is allowed. You may find it toxic, but it’s honest.

No issues with the honest criticisms, I’ve criticized Basis myself even as an overall happy parent. It’s the “honest” sarcasm and insults that are over the top. It’s a great school for a niche audience, and some parents find it attractive with the students who are there doing very well academically especially in STEM. Some parents will find the narrow focus off putting. The marketing and trolls are cringy, yes.

Schools that market themselves as the "top" school while their track record is bumbling and stumbling invite and merit sarcasm. That's a classic response to arrogance and pretense.

The fact that posters on DCUM were caught out by admin trolling and posing as many parents at once just cements the image of an unreliable school.

All fair game for public comment. If taking dings for their actions is "insults" then so be it. That's how life works for people who want to game their way to the top. Ask Congressman Santos about that.

Nothing invites sarcasm and insults, that's just what bullies and immature people say to make it seem OK. Don't know what bumbling and stumbling track record you're referring to. 2020 and earlier? Never heard the school calling itself the "top" school, but I've seen it done by other schools (not referring to GDS, STA, etc.). "Top school in *random quality* for XYZ"... pretty common marketing. Anyway, I haven't seen it at Basis but won't pretend it's impossible. The school is less than 10 years old and is aggressively trying to grow, which it has done very well for the past 2 years coming out of the pandemic.

Trolling of course should be called out. Nothing to do with the school being unreliable though, don't see the connection.

"all fair game for public comment" "so be it" "that's how life works" -- see my comment above about bullies and immature people. Yes, people have the right to not show decency, and others have the right to point it out (if nothing else, to remind new readers there are still people on this forum that believe in having adult conversations).

Obligatory side comment: I've never seen or heard of a case of bullying or people feeling left out since DC started at Basis. Everyone is inclusive, respectful, and focused on doing well in school.

The trolling is just in your feverous anti-BIM imagination.

You are gas lighting pure and simple.

The fact is that BIM is one of the top privates in the DMV.

It sounds like the best of all worlds. The proponents believe that BIM is one of the top privates, fine. Even better, anyone can enroll without admission stress, even better.

Everyone wins, including local radio stations.

It gives the cheerleaders something to do now that the selective schools have completed their cycle of sorting through multiple applications for every place they had. Gotta catch all those who didn't get in anywhere else.

So yeah, BIM does have a role to play. Too bad the propaganda cult never stops. Anyone who reads DCUM's private school boards widely knows where BIM ranks in parent esteem. It's there in black and white every year.

BASIS Independent McLean has earned the #2 ranking for Best High Schools for STEM in Virginia while rising to the #3 ranking for Best College Prep Private High Schools in Virginia, and #3 ranking for Best Private K-12 Schools in Virginia. Additionally, our school ranked as the #6 Best Private High School in Virginia.

Mr. Paul Geise, Head of School of BASIS Independent McLean, expressed, “In less than five years, we have begun to establish ourselves as an extraordinary learning environment. The key to our success: exemplary faculty, motivated students who lean into our robust and rigorous curriculum, and parents eager to have their children prepared to thrive in college and beyond. These rankings mark our progress and our trajectory. And the best is yet to come!”

Our rankings also show what’s possible…”

That’s old news.

In fact, Basis McLean ranks much higher now:
Number 1 in VA for these three categories: Best private high, best college prep private high, best k-12 private
Number 2 in both VA and DMV for best stem high
Number 3 in DMV for best k-12 private and best college prep private
Number 4 in DMV for best private high

Don’t trust those posts here

None of the schools that rank higher than Basis take Niche seriously, nor do they tout them.

Although just for fun, take a look at the Niche ratings in greater depth that the trolls are touting:

45% of students agree that they feel safe at their school.
45% of students agree that they like their school and feel happy there.
18% of students and parents agree that students at this school are creative and artsy.
18% of students and parents agree that students at this school are athletic
45% of students and parents agree that there are plenty of clubs and organizations for students to get involved in.
36% of students and parents agree that clubs and organizations get the funding they need.
36% of students and parents agree that lots of students participate in clubs and organizations.

The other curious item…and I certainly don’t have a prestigious BASIS Stem background….is that the math of the ratings doesn’t work. The total number of stars divided by the number of reviews puts the school at .

***** = 33 (33 * 5 = 165)
**** = 3 (3 * 4 = 12)
*** = 1 (1 * 3 = 3)
** = 2 (2 * 2 = 4)
* = 13 (13 * 1 = 13)

Total stars = 197 / 52 = 3.78. Materially below many other schools. But yeah, I doubt they paid anything to Niche.

You forgot this from PP above: “ Everyone is inclusive, respectful, and focused on doing well in school.” It is quite simply utopia.

Sure, because the school is still new, it has rocketed to the top in rankings in the past several years, and stuffed shirts like you disparage it because the parents aren’t at your country club.

You don’t understand how Niche ratings work.

Anonymous
I think I do actually. You pay Niche and “poof,” I school with five Heads in five years backed by Chinese private equity becomes the top ranked private school in Virginia.
Anonymous
I think the poll that says 45% of the student like their school and feel happy there is a red flag.. that sucks…..
