I agree with this. |
Does anyone know what happened to the students who made the threat? I heard they identified the students....but very little, if anything, happened to them. Is this true? I know APS, as well as many other school systems across the country, are moving away from suspensions/expulsions, but no punishment here in the name of equity does not sit well with me. Then again, I'm older, so may not be totally in tune with all the new thinking about schools, etc. |
Yes, I’m also surprised that nobody is talking about the elementary aged student making a gun threat, especially in light of what just happened in Newport News. But why are you saying “in the name of equity” - we don’t know what happened, right? |
I'm paraphrasing what I heard from my neighbors who are Key parents. They heard through the rumor mill that there was no punishment towards the kids. I hope that isn't true. |
I don't think anything was shared about the student or their punishment. It's a 3rd grader. Without info, what is there to discuss? |
What is there to discuss? As if the lack of info has stopped us before. |
We were told that disciplinary actions were taken, but that’s private info. So no idea what actions. |
Duran has done NOTHING except remove a beloved leader that the kids and parents trust. He certainly has not shown up to support Key or provide leadership in a time of crisis. As a parent of Key 3rd and 5th graders, I cannot emphasize enough how much the children, the teachers (especially our 3rd grade teachers), the staff, and parents need stability. The assignment of an individual who has clearly failed - not once but TWICE - as an administrator, speaks volumes about Duran and Graves inability to lead with intention and their strong desire to push this under the rug. We have not received any messages from Duran, not one. That’s not leadership. It’s hiding behind APS staff who just want to pass the buck onto the principle. Where was APS’s threat assessment team? Why isn’t anyone asking THAT question? APS admitted they were contacted immediately - why isn’t anyone questioning their decision to not lock down the school OR remove my child from a trailer where an active threat of gun violence was made towards another student? Bottom line - we need our principle back. |
How do I find out what the child wrote on the wall? |
This all infuriates me. When the current principal was hired, it was right when the building transition was being debated. As a parent, I thought it was clear that they brought in a highly qualified principal, but one that would ease the transition to a new space rather than fight it. As a family that had been at the old building for many years, I was disheartened that APS made sure to install leadership that would fall in line. Here’s the thing. I don’t think I was wrong, but I also think they appointed a principal who was incredibly qualified, probably so nobody could complain. She has done such a great job with our community, and I realize now that no principal could have successfully challenged APS’s determination to relocate Key. I think Duran May not realize how delicate this situation is, and how much of a hornets’ nest he’s stepping on if he tries to strip Key of a principal who is so beloved by the school community. |
Did Key (or APS or whomever) immediately identify the child who wrote the message and remove her from campus? That’s the part of this that I don’t understand. The messages on MONA are talking about the need for a lockdown, but they also said the author and target of the message had been identified. I don’t see why the whole school (or even classroom) needed to be locked down if they knew which two students were involved. |
My understanding is that she wrote a note on the wall in the bathroom threatening to kill another student. |
That is my understanding as well. The note also included a racial slur, although not "accurate" towards the targeted student. |
The parent wrote a post on AEM about the incident, and that is what they said happened. What is actually said is not PP's business unless she is the parent. |
It's everyone's business that a 3rd grader made a gun threat and that the school didn't call the police right away. Do you really think only the one targeted kid was at risk? Third graders aren't exactly great shots and to my understanding they didn't search school grounds and didn't immediately know who made the threat to detain them. The whole school was at risk. |
