Escuela Key

Can someone summarize what's been going on at Escuela Key? Why did APS put the principal on leave?

Does APS really think its okay to foist the super controversial ex-Taylor principal on Key?

Oh no! I hadn’t heard they’d placed the Key principal on leave. She’s wonderful. We’re a former Key family - I assume the community isn’t happy about this?

It was done with no transparency and no explanation.

Dear Escuela Key Staff and Families,

I am writing to inform you that Iliana Gonzales will serve as Acting Principal beginning tomorrow, Tue, Jan. 31, as we continue to investigate the response to the recent threat. She is currently the Director of Planning and has extensive administrative experience, including having previously served as an elementary principal. She also brings an extensive background in dual-language immersion programs having served as Assistant Principal at Claremont Immersion.

We understand that this is a difficult time for all and are committed to continuing to support students, staff and families academically as well as socially and emotionally during this temporary change in school administration.

We will be holding a community meeting for families to meet with Ms. Gonzales from 6-6:30 p.m. on Thu, Feb. 2. Additional details to follow.

We will keep you informed regarding the next steps and ways we continue to support students and staff. I appreciate your patience during this time.

Sincerely,

Kimberley Graves
Chief of School Support

Sounds like many parents were unhappy with how a recent student threat mentioning a gun was handled.

It seems to be related to a recent gun threat by a 3rd grader and how it was handled.

Literally no one has suggested that it was a personal issue.

Do not have the full story, but the threat was directed at a specific student.

School did not call police.

Parent of a child who was threatened then called police. Parent also says they were notified of the threat hours after it was discovered by school.

Principal was not put on leave until more than a week after the incident (school held town hall last week with APS admins and police).

They were unhappy with APS administration, not the principal. She's being scapegoated.

Good luck with that!
