Shows to watch when I just need to escape

If you like British shows, Ghosts on HBO is good, cheesy fun. This couple inherited a huge old house filled with ghosts who don’t want them to renovate it.

Hustle on Tubi (free streaming service) is also good, mindless entertainment. It’s about a group of con artists in London. They show enough of a conscience that you’ll feel okay rooting them on. A lot of the plots are a bit unbelievable if you think about them too hard, but they are emotionally satisfying. A lot of revenge against a-holes. The first season takes a bit to find its footing, so unless you can’t stand to watch things out of order, I would jump in a bit later then circle back if you want. Most episodes are pretty self- contained.

Much Ado About Nothing with Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson
Anne of Green Gables
The Secret Garden
Jane Eyre 2006 BBC version with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens (not really upbeat, but good)

Not British/PBS, but you might consider:
Little House on the Prairie
Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman

For a true escape, consider watching Showtime's Your Honor with Bryan Cranston or Breaking Bad.

+1 on Ghosts (but only the British version not the American one)

Don’t know Hustle but it reminded of outlaws— a British show about a bunch of people thrown together to do community service for minor crimes— it’s good.

OH no those are brutal, disturbing shows. What a terrible recommendation!

Are you me, OP? I love this post, because I am looking for the same thing. Here are ones I watched.

Crash Landing on You (like another PP, this and Offspring were my favorites- I was sad when those both ended. For Crash Landing, it does have subtitles, so I held off a long time, but once you get used to them this is an amazing show. Give it a few episodes. I even got DH to watch this with me)
Poldark
The empress
call the midwife
derry girls (DH also liked this one)
emily in paris
Bridgerton
Lovesick (DH was willing to watch this one too)
Reign- I actually liked this and found it a fun escape
The White Queen (Amazon prime)
The Spanish Princess (Amazon prime)
The White Princess- I liked this the least of the three, it goes between the others (Amazon prime)
Sanditon
Belgravia

My heart still has 2 giant holes from these two shows — I cannot find anything close to filling the void. Probably next favorite far down the line is Good Behavior - get to see Lady Mary Crawley as a thief and her co-dependent/complicated relationship with the lovely Argentinian hit man.

I second Belgravia. Great cast and everything you liked about Jane Austen movies.

Poldark raped Elizabeth. I stopped watching it.

I've been watching Astrid on PBS. It's great. There are two seasons now.
I enjoyed The Recruit on Netflix. It's not even my thing, but it was humorous and involving.
My DS has ADHD and we're trying to teach him to drive, so yeah, stress. No worries, he's not hitting the road by himself until he's safe.

OP, you have very similar taste in TV shows to me.

Someone else suggested Deterctorists, quirky and funny.

The Danish show Rita, about a teacher with an independent streak.

McLeod's Daughters
Australian outback with women running the ranch and handsome men as love interests. Kept me engaged for months!
