I think the loss of a few critical stores and the movie theaters that encouraged traffic turned out to be a big problem — that escalated. DSW benefitted by being next to Nordstrom Rack. The movie theaters and Borders (before DSW) were open late — and drove foot traffic to the fast casual restaurants. Now that there’s no normal drug store / pharmacy or normal grocery store, people often drive to other neighborhoods— and that lack of foot traffic reduces more impulsive shopping. There’s little reason to shop in FH — when you can get whatever you need in Bethesda or even Chevy Chase, DC. More destination restaurants and the soon-to-open new food hall will be great additions to the neighborhood.
