People who stay standing at seated concerts

Anonymous
Unless you are in a section where most people are standing and/or the performers specifically ask you to stand up it is incredibly rude to stand the whole time. No one paid to see you and your dancing. Your dancing isn’t what you think it is. Sit down and let everyone enjoy the concert. Dance in your seat.

So you make the rules for everyone?

Whoever you are, don't cause a big who ha if someone is standing. It makes things really awkward for those of us around you. And it never ever works.

Ever been to a symphony?

If someone remained standing at a symphony, the ushers would demand they sit or leave.

I’m a stander, but wouldn’t do what op says. I truly can’t understand how people can just sit there are a great concert when the band is tearing it up.

I am at a loss for OP. Rick, pop, and country concerts are not for sitting. If asked to sit I would say no. Stay home and listen to the radio. There is no rule to sit. To the contrary, the normal convention is to stand. 84-85 I went to 15 Bruce concerts. Each four hours. Sat only during 6 or so songs.

He asked people in the upper levels to come down to the floor, and people in the orchestra seats to stand. They did. So the seat that I had picked specifically to be able to watch the fingers of the guitarists was surrounded by towering people who never sat down. Rock on!

Please tell me this wasn’t Bob Weir

Hahaha I’m envisioning you doing jazzercise class at the senior center where everyone sits there and moves their arms. Are you 80?

I’m not sitting during my favorite band and I don’t care you don’t want to watch me dance. Close your eyes.

Not PP but the rules are made by the concert goers who stand.

If I’m dancing, I’m not creeping into anybody’s space around me. If I’m the absolute only person standing, ok then I’m going to sit down sheepishly.

But if the people behind me simply don’t feel like standing and plenty of others do, I’m going to shrug and say sorry not sorry. It’s a concert and lots of people want to get into it and move with the music. Their preference does not override mine. It’s the risk you take by going to a concert as a sitter.

I agree. I think it's fine to stand, except where the person behind you is physically unable to stand, or maybe a kid who will be unable to see at all. Maybe also in an outlier situation where you are the only person standing - in that case, it's probably not that type of show, and I think you should bend to overall group preference and sit.

But in most cases, there is a mix of sitting and standing and I think in that case you are allowed to stand even if the people directly behind you/most people in your section have chosen to sit.

I agree. I don't mind standing or sitting but usually the people in front of me are standing so I have to stand to be able to see. In this case I'm not sitting just because someone behind me can't stand. If there is that much of an issue with it they need to book seats to accommodate that.

It's a concert. I expect to have to stand for much of it. I know that going in. Even in the theater seating.

Still waiting for an example of a concert (not a symphony!) where most of the audience was sitting. Need to know what to avoid.

I stand at all concerts I go to. Stand and dance. I love it.

Stand against the wall, then. Be considerate of others.

Any concert that thoughtful adults attend. If you want specifics, I recently sat through Lyle Lovett, Dolly Parton and (much of) Elton John.

Stay home! I cannot imagine staying seated during a concert (obviously not talking about symphony or something formal).

I was recently at the Mavericks at the Lincoln. Everyone sat until the last few songs.

Everyone around me also sat at the Who and Roxy Music shows I attended at Cap One Arena.

What kind of concerts are you guys attending that everyone is standing in their seats all the time? I saw it once at a Robyn show at The Anthem -- this huge man would get up and "dance" in his seat every 10 seconds because his girlfriend kept telling him, "c'mon, babe, dance, dance!" It was already an awful view of the stage and nobody paid $150+ for him to wiggle his hips for IG.
