People who stay standing at seated concerts

I stand at all concerts I go to. Stand and dance. I love it.

So, you don't ever consider the person behind you?

Not that PP, but what if she’s at Taylor Swift, does she need to sit so the person behind her can see? Even if she spent $400 a ticket?

That sounds so amazing! For you.

Ever been to a symphony?
Is that what OP is referring to? Doesn’t sound like it.

Look around. If most people are standing, fine. If most people are sitting, plant your ass in your seat. It's called reading the room.

It may be because their back hurts when they stand.

I went through a period where due to back pain I’d end up often watching movies or plays while standing from the back of the theater. Always tried to get an aisle seat so I could duck out and stand in the back. I would not have just stood up in my seat though. Sometimes I would go to the edge near the wall and stretch for thirty seconds or so and then go back to my seat.

Love streaming from home now!

I think my general rule is do your best not to be a jerk. If the person behind you physically cannot stand, I would try to sit or stand out of their view if possible. If I’m dancing, I’m not creeping into anybody’s space around me. If I’m the absolute only person standing, ok then I’m going to sit down sheepishly.

But if the people behind me simply don’t feel like standing and plenty of others do, I’m going to shrug and say sorry not sorry. It’s a concert and lots of people want to get into it and move with the music. Their preference does not override mine. It’s the risk you take by going to a concert as a sitter.

I agree. I think it's fine to stand, except where the person behind you is physically unable to stand, or maybe a kid who will be unable to see at all. Maybe also in an outlier situation where you are the only person standing - in that case, it's probably not that type of show, and I think you should bend to overall group preference and sit.

But in most cases, there is a mix of sitting and standing and I think in that case you are allowed to stand even if the people directly behind you/most people in your section have chosen to sit.

Okay, so what if the person in front of YOU wants to put someone on their shoulders for the entire concert, thereby blocking your view?

I think that’s outside the bounds of this hypothetical of a theater venue. At least I’ve never seen this in a theater. Sounds dangerous! But if you’re talking floor seats of a stadium venue, that’s the risk you take getting floor. I’m short and never choose floor because I probably won’t be able to see.

I can't think of a concert I've been to where people are sitting. 99% of people are standing. Many are dancing within their space. I would certainly not stand if I was the only one, or one of the few. I'm more interested in what concerts the OP was referring to where everyone is sitting.

My DH has told those people to sit down 🤣 and it wasn’t a “seated concert” like OP asked about. It didn’t go over well.

New poster. Sorry I do not. I am very short, so it's unlikely someone can't see over me. I paid a ton for my ticket, I'm going to stand and dance the entire concert. Same with 98% of the venue.

If you insist on everyone staying seated, just stay home. We came to party and dance.
