Must've missed those posts... |
I can’t decide if this is an actual a rumor that multiple people believe, or if it’s just one poster’s favorite hobbyhorse. But it’s utterly ridiculous to think it was created and maintained for the sole benefit of maybe a few dozen kids over the course of decades, and the rest of the in-bounds magnet kids were just along for the ride. I’ve also seen people (the same poster?) claim the program was placed at TPMS in the first place for the benefit of the Council’s kids. |
I remember a post stating this a few years ago. Guessing it's the same poster with an axe to grind. |
The problem was that when the set-aside was established the program was so monopolized by out of bound kids that the local parents were screaming racism even though the program was working as designed to attract OOB kids. The 25 was a placation gesture for local representation so that would have to compete with the county wide standard which is pretty high. |
| So there are actually 500 students in the magnet program? 400 that competed and 100 that were all local admits? The official MCPS letter sent to college students made it sound as if the 25 local set-asides were the same as the 100 selected from across the County. Wow. Shameful. |
| ^^ At Blair. |
No, Blair has no local set-asides. That's TPMS. |
DP, of course there would be more out of bounds students than local students. One local area vs the whole county for 100 spots. Simple math. Them bargaining for 25 set-aside seats was a genius move. Well done Takoma Park, well done! -Poster from upcountry. |
My gosh, your reading comprehension is lacking. Shameful! |

People, you don't have to argue over bus times for Blair magnet. It is posted on the web:
https://mbhs.edu/newsevents/Announcements/BLAIR%20HS%20-%20757%20-%20MAGNET%20ARR.pdf Many of the bus routes are not very long, while a few are longer. The longest is 77 minutes. From an actual Blair magnet parent |
| It’s funny how people move to good school districts and would never live in silver spring or within the DCC and yet expect their kids should go to the magnet. |
Every word of this is wrong. Blair does not have any local set-asides. Also, what "official MCPS letter sent to college students?" |
Can you point to any proof for this timeline? The 25 seat set-aside isn't mentioned in the Metis Report and MCPS doesn't even really discuss it. So, where is the proof that it hasn't been there since Day One? |

No clue, but it's been there forever. In fact, we moved to TKPK, especially for these opportunities. I mean that's what parents who value education do. |
