Yes, I've heard this too, but half of Blair comes from TPMS and the TPMS magnet directory pre-lottery showed similar numbers of kids from most schools.

Mostly the TPMS magnet and those kids come from all over. Local kids had such a hard time getting in they had to create a set aside of 25 seats for the TPMS program to ensure that the local kids didn't have to compete at the higer cut offs.

Nah, this set aside was created for politically connected children of liberal democratic pols in Moco who vote the right way. It should be called the MCPS-Takoma Park-County Council Industrial Complex. Blair Magnet is a political reward.

I can’t decide if this is an actual a rumor that multiple people believe, or if it’s just one poster’s favorite hobbyhorse. But it’s utterly ridiculous to think it was created and maintained for the sole benefit of maybe a few dozen kids over the course of decades, and the rest of the in-bounds magnet kids were just along for the ride. I’ve also seen people (the same poster?) claim the program was placed at TPMS in the first place for the benefit of the Council’s kids.

The problem was that when the set-aside was established the program was so monopolized by out of bound kids that the local parents were screaming racism even though the program was working as designed to attract OOB kids. The 25 was a placation gesture for local representation so that would have to compete with the county wide standard which is pretty high.

So there are actually 500 students in the magnet program? 400 that competed and 100 that were all local admits? The official MCPS letter sent to college students made it sound as if the 25 local set-asides were the same as the 100 selected from across the County. Wow. Shameful.

No clue, but it's been there forever. In fact, we moved to TKPK, especially for these opportunities. I mean that's what parents who value education do.
