Blair Magnet - geographical differences in acceptance rates?

I have heard from other parents that kids that come from Whitman/Churchill/ BCC/Wooten are less likely to get into the magnet program than kids from less privileged areas. I’m not sure if this is just rumor or an actual policy meant to help diversity. Just wondering if there had been any public discussions if this by MoCo school administrators. Thanks.

They use a lottery with a MAP cutoff, right? The cutoff used is normed to the FARMS rate, so that would implicitly make it harder to get it from more "privileged" schools.

Funny many W parents claim that they're the most represented at the Magnets so both can't be true.

No they dont They either have constructed crazy carpools for 6am or their kid is out there in the dark waiting for a bus that drives around in traffic jams for 90 minutes. Then again at 3 or 4pm.

Yes, I've heard this too, but half of Blair comes from TPMS and the TPMS magnet directory pre-lottery showed similar numbers of kids from most schools.

No blair bus takes 90 minutes. The bus is fine, its a half hour tops.

They appear to be well represented in the national merit student lists at the magnet, did I recall that right?

Blair students, a group that is selected on the basis of standardized testing, do well on PSAT/NMSQT, which is a standardized test? Color me shocked.

My kids bus which goes less than a mile from their ES to their daycare takes 40 mins so that's not so bad.

Mostly the TPMS magnet and those kids come from all over. Local kids had such a hard time getting in they had to create a set aside of 25 seats for the TPMS program to ensure that the local kids didn't have to compete at the higer cut offs.
