Nice try but not only did my child contract covid last school year while everyone was masked, but both of my kids caught colds this year while wearing masks.

I suppose I could just homeschool but I'd rather my kids develop functional immune systems through exposure in childhood like they are supposed to.

Well, mask properly. Mask using good quality masks. Change and wash masks frequently.

Uh, good masks cannot be washed. If you are wearing cloth masks, you are getting a fraction of the protection of a proper mask, and children wearing cloth masks at school get even less because their masks get damp quickly.

But then, my kid doesn’t mask at school unless she is still recovering from something or there is something circulating. So she’s masking now, with a KN95. Still got whatever respiratory virus is out there. Masks are useful tools but (1) I personally think it’s bad for kids to wear them all the time, and (2) they don’t eliminate illness.

Telling someone whose kids got sick despite masking that they must not be masking hard enough is toxic displacement of your health fears onto other people. And not just anyone, but specifically parents, especially mothers, who have have spent the last two years trying to keep their kids healthy and safe. Just stop.

Ugh, I feel you, OP. I’m so tired (and sick myself right now) and behind on work. I can’t wait for things to calm down a bit.

In the last 3 months our 2 kids have had HFM twice, RSV, pink eye, and another RSV croup like virus. Winter is going to be a shit show.

I don’t get this - are kids immune systems really that weak after Covid? I have 3 kids (7, 6 and 2) and they are disgusting. They suck their thumb, put gross stuff in their mouth, in general are just gross and have yet to be home sick more than once. Since Covid started 2 of the 3 kids have had it but it was completely asymptomatic. Other than that we just have had random colds that were runny nose sort of thing. Maybe we are just lucky.

You’re just lucky

Name the illness and one of my kids has it. One even had chicken pox though she was vaccinated against it.

Also, I can’t attribute it to being masked up as neither of my older kids were required to mask in daycare and as someone who worked for FEMA, I was still in the office during covid.

I’m really sorry. It’s so hard and draining. We’re in the same boat with frequency of illness.

Is the 2 year old in day care? That's been the source of almost all of our constant illnesses. The elementary schooler has brought home a fraction as many.

It depends on if they have a good non-woven filter in it or not but anything is better than nothing. A KN95 is unregulated so I don't get bragging about it when it should be an N95.

I guess you're lucky then. My 2 year old has been sick once or twice a month for a year. I hoped it would die down by now, but no.

There is no reason to delay flu shots till October so that it can last till March. Your kids will mostly fall ill in Sept, Oct, Nov and Dec - when school opens, and when there is much holiday travelling.

It all calms down by Jan, Feb, March - because people get immunity. So, don't wait for your flu vaccine.

Rounding up my kids to go to Kaiser permanente for flu shots during their limited hours is a struggle. We don’t live close. I know I should just go to CVS but it’s like $100+ for us.

So you’d rather risk getting flu than going to the trouble of getting flu shots? 🤔

43 full weeks/10 months of the year you’ve had sick kids at home? Or do you mean that at least one day of the week for 43 weeks of the year you’ve had sick kids?

If the former, are your kids immune-compromised or have health conditions that make them especially vulnerable?
