It was built in 1997 and has had at least two renovations, including during COVID. It is as state of the art as any arena in the country.

Dunno. 1997 is pretty old as far as sports arenas go.

It was a bit of a haul but the traffic pattern in and out was so far ahead of it's time.

Saw a couple of fabulous Grateful Dead shows there in 92/93

MCi Center until 2006, Verizon Center until 2017, now Capital One. MCI doesn't exist anymore.

They should have just named it the Abe Pollin Center from the beginning.

I miss randomly seeing polo played near the Mall. Things change.

Saw someone smoking crack for the first time in my life last month in our back alley. If MCI/Verizon/Cap Arena were to leave it will mean the death of this neighborhood.

It will be a little more like it was in the 90s. I remember when that area was “rehabilitated” around the arena when it was built.

That place is the Capital Centre in Landover, long since gone. It was demolished in the early 2000s. I graduated from HS there in 1987, and my DH worked a ton of Caps games & concerts at the Cap Centre. Here's a fun look back:

The move was caused by the pandemic. I hope that eventually the horse show will be able to return.

Honestly a Navy Yard arena would be kind of nice.

Why would this be better than the one that’s smack in the middle of downtown?

It would be harder to get to?

I saw a monster truck rally there. Very disappointed, I was expecting real monsters. It occurs to me what I was expecting wouldn't fit inside.

Exactly. The central location is perfect and was really important to the incredible renaissance that happened downtown over the following 25 years.
