Prior to US News, selecting a college or university was little more than by "word-of-mouth" reputation.

The first US News college rankings appeared in 1983. Looks as though only 13 schools were ranked--although I am not sure of this.

1983# US News rankings:

1) Stanford
2) Harvard
3) Yale
4) Princeton

5) UCal-Berkeley
6) Chicago
7) Michigan
8) Cornell
8) Illinois
10) MIT
10) Dartmouth
12) CalTech
13) Wisconsin

The internet didn't exist when US News started ranking colleges. Now you have access to a ton of information and can make your own list. It's worth the time. This website has some ideas on where to look for data for your own list, although it looks like they're still working on it (not complete yet).
