Kid-friendly Indian food

I would do chicken tikka. No masala. Or offer them a choice of one or the other.

At one point, my kids preferred non-mixed food, and would have balked at butter chicken and masala, but would wolf down chicken tikka. So I would do chicken tikka, plain rice, and naan.

Butter chicken (without too much sauce) or chicken tikka and naan. Some like samosas too. Especaily ones that aren't too spicy.

So much depends on what kind of foods these friends have been exposed to: you could be dealing with fairly sophisticated palates or a chicken nugget, mac and cheese crowd. I would advise not killing yourself cooking and then watching the kids expectantly as they eat or don’t. Ask your kids what they think. I second going heavy on the garlic butter naan and chicken tikka.

The first Indian dishes my kids enjoyed - I called them our gateway foods - were chicken tandoori, chicken tikka masala / butter chicken, veggie pakora, any meat served on a stick, anything they could dip in that sweet tamarind sauce, and of course tons of rice and naan. Later they moved on to lamb curries, biryani, lentils / chickpeas, and the various paneer dishes.

Seekh kebab is a good idea. Meat + finger food is a winning combo.

+1 my DD doesn't really like Indian food (the rest of us do), and can't handle spice. But she likes the tandoori dishes, and the basmati rice. Samosas are good, too, but they may be spicy.

And all the desserts.

Mine would eat madras lentils, butter chicken and naan. Of course, this was washed down with a mango lassi.

We used to love tandoori chicken when we were kids. Serve it with naan and some salad.

And everyone loves a samosa. And some kind of chaat.

Mango lassi too.

Who’s going to be standing there turning out fresh dosas?
