Kid-friendly Indian food

Make sure to have plenty of (unspiced) bread. I adored poori at that age — being allowed to eat with my fingers was a treat. As an adult I love Indian food but still have no spice tolerance to korma is my default choice.

My kids love Indian food and we have none of that heritage. I think main thing is to go easy on the spices.

They love chicken tikka masala or butter chicken, aloo gobi, naan of course, and samosas.

But it will really depend on what the kids have been raised eating and are willing to try. We have a Bangladeshi neighbor who always brings amazing food to our neighborhood pot lucks and any kid who is willing to try it loves it! And that's on the kids' parents - not on you!

My kids like chicken biryani and chicken tandoori. One likes spicy things like vindaloo but the other does not at all. I think lentils can be a hard sell with some kids but others like them. If I made that, I might have an alternate choice (although if my kid ate rice and a mango lassi for dinner that would be fine for just a night). I think cauliflower is also risky.

Rice, cauliflower, butter chicken, naan… or lots of different proteins that aren’t too spicy so they can choose.

I’ve had great success feeding non Indian kids naan, butter paneer, saag paneer, chana masala, aloo Gobi, jeera rice.

Everything! Millions of Indian kids eat Indian food every day.

You’d have to order in, but masala paper dosas with sambar would be visually impressive and fun.

Never met a kid who didn’t like gulab jamun.

Chicken biriyani with pachadi is always popular.

Appalam.

Oh, and yogurt rice or lemon rice with really mild lemon pickles on the side.

Mango lassi.

CTM
Palak paneer
Non-spicy samosas

Also wanted to recommend matter paneer. Whenever we go out for Indian food we joke that we needed to order my daughter one serving of matter paneer and then a communal bowl based on how much she likes matter paneer

Dosa with a chutney on the side is typically a hit. If they are not comfortable eating with their hands, jeera rice with a side of dal/butter chicken etc and maybe some vegetables sautéed with salt pepper.

My non Indian kids love Chana masala and basically any bean/lentil dish with Naan. Spice tolerance varies by child.

Saag or palak paneer (cheese cubes in spinach based sauce)

Butter chicken or chicken marsala - if not spicey

All Indian food is kid-friendly.
