| Kids are 9-12 and not used to Indian food (as far as I know). What would you serve that is appealing enough for them to try but not so out of ordinary thet they’ll go home hungry? |
|
Northern or southern?
Do these kids belong to someone else? Idli a lentil dish samosas medu vada |
| Butter chicken but don’t go heavy on the spice. |
| Butter chicken or chicken tikka masala, easy on the spice. Maybe try Trader Joe’s frozen entrees first to see if they like them. |
| My 8 year likes matar paneer (ordered mild), rice, naan and samosas. |
|
OP, are you Indian and trying to feed kids unfamiliar with the cuisine?
I’d offer plain rice with ghee, roti or naan, aloo sabzi, butter chicken or butter paneer, chole or rajma, tadka dal. Also snacks like samosa, dhokla, naan pizza: look in the frozen aisle at Patel Brothers. |

Poori-halwa- aloo sabji
Kheer Butter chicken or butter paneer with parantha Fried cauliflower with peas pilaf, daal, and aloo raita |
|
tandoori chicken
seekh kebab bhel veggi pakodas |
Lol yes. These are friends of my kids. I am Indian, the food can be North or South Indian. I know what my kid eats, I don’t know what will be universally ok apart from mango lassi. |
Seekh kebab is a good idea. Meat + finger food is a winning combo. |
My kid is 5 and has only eaten Indian food at restaurants, but she is not used to any cuisine that has a lot of “stews” — food mixed together. That’s my bad. I haven’t served her enough foods were the foods are all mixed and touching. So she likes naan, chicken, samosas, but she does not like the vegetable dishes that the rest of the family gets. And she cannot tolerate any spice. |
| Chana Masala controlling the spice level. Very easy to make at home. |
|
My kids (3 and 6, non-Indian) eat dal makhani reliably, and of course, they love naan. A samosa works too.
