When does homesickness come?

Yeah, good point. Most colleges actually have classes on Wednesday - it's not like private school around DC where it's like a 1.5 day week.

If you have to travel some distance or college is inconvenient to get to, they may be figuring "I'll be home for Christmas in 3 weeks" so why go to the hassle.

OP I completely sympathize. My DS announced 2 weeks after dropping him at college that he was going to get a summer job OOS and would not come home. That's exactly what he did.

We are very close, and I don't think it's a reflection on that at all. I think he is feeling independent and supported. I definitely missed him that summer. Not going to lie, it was hard because I always assumed I would have that time.

Try to not take it personally and be happy for him.

Yep, I feel that is going to be coming next as he is going to a job fair for his major in Sept. for summer internships. Ugh. I'm not ready. I was counting the days until Thanksgiving until he said that - and yes its a complicated flight and trip and he would only be here for 3.5 days but still.

I had so much fun in college from the very start. I never went home and never wanted to. Home was only like 25 miles away. I'm sure that part of it was my parents being distant and a little severe. They were all about tough love, grit, self-reliance, criticism, limiting praise, etc. So, I guess I'm a capable adult, but there was never much of an impulse for me to go home once I left.
