For us its a tie between our mustang and wrangler. My only issue with the wrangler is the small trunk size vs. my old SUV. |
I prefer my own. |
Mini cooper. It does have 2 seats in the back, but that would be super cramped. DS (age 16) and I drove a mini cooper from San Diego to DC a few years ago, and it was great! I've driven cross country in a Odyssey mini-van before and the mini cooper was just...zippier! Being tiny was fun, and helped me feel more in control when driving on some of narrow, winding, right next to a cliff roads in Colorado. |
Hitch tray and cargo bag. Problem solved. |
| Agree with all the Honda Odyssey answers. I drove my 2003 Honda Odyssey all over the country many many times in my 20's (yes, I owned a minivan in my 20's, I am a musician). It was great. Hardly got pulled over (total mom van), Honda reliability, and smooth cruising ride. Haven't tried the new ones but they look even bigger. |
Forget the insurance. If you have anything approaching an accident on a unpaved road the insurance won’t cover the claim. Signed, person who’s been known to engage in frolics and detours. |

Best road trip was I took a 1975 450SL on a ski trip to Killington VT when single. I actually had a ski rack on roof of the two seater Mercedes. Went with buddy.
I drove the car 1,000 miles that weekend. Went to pickle barrel happy hour. And while out bar hopping a big snow storm we picked up two girls and went to their place. I swear the car and exhaust system was sliding through snow 4 people in a two seater car at 2 am in a snow storm. I actually saw my muffler steaming in the snow when I parked their house. On way home we were tailgating a guy with a radar detector and I was being tailgated. For over one hour straight we drive 100 mph with two sets of skis on roof. Shocked they stayed in. I think everyone thought what idiot takes a rear wheel drive 20 year old old Mercedes convertible with 120,000 miles out in a snowstorm with skis attached to hardtop for a 1,000 mile trip to happy hours and bars. Well it was President weekend and beer, skiing and girls involved so why not I was shocked the engine did not blow up! Best road trip |
Same here... we likely won't buy another Odyssey. Honda has lost me as a customer, likely for good. This makes me sad. Even for the Hondas that do offer a Hybrid drivetrain, they are so far behind Toyota it's laughable. The CR-V hybrid offers less power, worse fuel economy, and no electric-only driving mode. Honda is floundering. Hyundai and Kia cars have handily surpassed Honda for new drivetrain design. |
I prefer my bronco for this reason plus if i take the back seat out i can fit a twin size mattress in the back |

I look more at the features that make for a nice road trip:
-Comfort, smooth ride -Excellent mileage -Quiet interior and lack of road noise -Excellent driver assist tech: adaptive cruise control, lane assist or hands free driving, etc. -Excellent audio system and large map display (Apple CarPlay is a must for me) Given all these requirements, I’d probably go with a Lexus NX Hybrid. |
Plymouth Prowler is always the answer. |
What an idiot. And are you going to encourage your kid to do the same? Because they might not come back to tell the tale. |
Yes. It actually handled well. I had G60 Radials on car for a mean look and I had Posi rear. I did same trip years later with a GF in a late model wrangler and on black ice I almost rolled the jeep. The 4WD got me cocky and on black ice it slid out and when it ended I knew if sideward would flip when hit dry payment. To be honest at 16 I drove my Moms 1971 Buick Estate Wagon with a 454 CI engine and 21 foot long and was doing donuts and that car was safest car in world buy at same time massive size and weight I would have knocked down a house in an accident |

Love, love, love road trips in my Tesla M3.
Handles like a dream on the highway, and charging stops (at least with my long range) are always right around when I'd want to stop and stretch my legs anyway. My wife and I call Autopilot "Blizzard mode" because we stop at Dairy Queen and get Blizzards and the driver can eat theirs while the car drives itself. |
God help us all. |
