OMG. Give me a break. For a greek event years ago, we did a lip sync contest through the decades. My sorority picked 4 songs across certain decades and I was part of a Rap group. There were 4 of us in my group--3 caucasion and 1 asian. We were doing a song by a group of black men. I didn't paint my face black or anything ridiculous but I absolutely rocked some adidas and had one pant leg up like LL Cool J. Another girl had on MC Hammer pants. We were not appropriating anything. Get a flipping grip.

I know you don’t get it but you are digging the hole deeper.

I don’t know how VT or UVA sororities would be, but at JMU there would be absolutely no problem.

I would say that about all the VA schools.

Really ? Can you name a sorority that has a diverse group of girls?

as I posted earlier, my dd's sorority at UVA is quite diverse. I am not going to name it because I don't want to put personal info out there but it's a "middle tier" sorority. She has lots of friends from all ethnicities and actually those considered to be "minorities' actually had more options during rush than she did and she is a white girl. I think the houses are trying to be more inclusive and placed high value on URM. I know several of her friends in "top" houses that are URM, but again as someone else mentioned, UVA is really quite diverse so you do not any thing to fear. My DS is in a fraternity at UVA and he is in the minority as a white guy.

You won’t post the name because we can look up their pictures and see they are not actually diverse.

This would never have been a problem when I was in college and I graduated from Chapel Hill in the mid 90s from the “party sorority” of the time. you are overthinking this OP.

I am not digging any hole. I graduated in 1996. And it was funny then and it is fun and funny now. No one actually thought we were trying to be black men or were trying minimize their struggles. It was a lip sync. People dressing up as native americans is NOT an attempt to appropriate their culture or to minimize it. You need to stop being so offended and stop looking for insult in everything. I am Irish and if people want to dress up as Irish with a red wig and freckles (both of which I have) I do not get all freaked out and call a lawyer. Calm down. Let people have fun. And let's be real. With your pinched views you never even considered going Greek.

I'd have her do some homework on the origins of Greek life in the US ASAP. It's painfully offensive stuff. I would hope that the average White person would have zero interest in perpetuating the Greek system. And a Black or Latino who thinks this is okay? SMH. https://www.propublica.org/article/ole-miss-students-pose-with-guns-in-front-of-shot-up-emmett-till-memorial And you're talking about her joining these people at a school located in the state where the capitol of the confederacy was literally located. Wake up, OP! https://blog.royalhistsoc.org/2021/07/28/why-historically-white-sororities-and-fraternities-are-racially-problematic-in-us-universities/

As for getting a bid, if she looks like Selena Gomez or Penelope Cruz, she likely won't have a problem. Everyone will just treat her like a fellow conventionally pretty White girl. If she's got the coloring and body type of America Ferrara, she probably will have trouble, unless they decide to hold her up as a token of their wokeness.

The other thing to consider is that her fellow POC students will not look positively upon her pandering to join the Hellenic types who make POC feel unwelcome and excluded on the campuses of UVA and VT. And the non-clueless White students will also look askance at it. Remember that the "You will not replace us" rally took place in Charlottesville. https://www.vogue.com/article/uva-after-charlottesville-attack

...and you know that how? You can absolutely go to their instagrams and see what they post. Most of the houses will show a very diverse group of young women.

So glad to see we have another greek bashing thread perpetuated by the 2-3 anti greek people on this board who just post all over these threads I'd say 2-3 of the FIFTEEN sororities at UVA, yep agreed not very diverse. Most of them ARE quite diverse and some are even predominantly diverse (in all ways, ethnicity, lgbtq+ etc). Like I said, my DD's two closest friends (both URM) had he max options they could throughout rush whereas my DD did not.

but if you are someone who actually KNOWS about the greek scene at UVA, feel free to tell your story.

GO AWAY. It has been said over and over and over that the stupid unite the right rally was in no way reflective of UVA's culture.

BTW there are also several multi-cultural organizations if those appeal more to her. They are very popular. https://atuva.student.virginia.edu/organization/multiculturalgreekcouncil/

OP here. The bolded part is what makes me uneasy about this whole greek thing. Too much value put on looks, and by what lense are the being measured? I hope my daughter will be able to find an inclusive sorority if she ends up rushing in the end.

Greek life is just about that in many cases. My college had rush during new student week, before any freshman had even had their first class and 2 days after they had arrived on campus. The process just seemed so much like "pay to have friends". At a minimum, IMO, rush shouldn't happen until at least 2nd semester so students have the opportunity to meet people and make friends on their own accord and explore clubs/activites before going thru a process that can be cruel and is often based on superficial factors. I sat back and watched girls feeling dejected because their top 3 choices "didn't want them", so they switched to liking Sorority X, when the day before they "hated sorority X and would never want to be a part of that". Also watched girls who had just started making friend groups in the dorm and at new student activities, no longer continue building on the friendships that had just started because after the first 2-3 days of Rush they were heading towards different sororities and rush/sorority life/pledging took up so much of their social time. Just seemed sad that these kids didn't have enough self confidence to trust they could build lifelong friendships on their own, without a group of 50 older girls telling them they were in or out.

Put being Hispanic, and I don’t mean this very disrespectfully, if she’s a student at UVA Virginia Tech, most people will assume she’s white and she’s Hispanic and doesn’t have an accent.

If she’s interested in rushing, she should know that it’s a costly commitment and it’s really about paying to be in a social club and to be in a group of friends. It can be very fun, and very social outing and party oriented, but there is usually a heavy focus on drinking and going to fraternity parties. Only 35% UVA is Greek, but when I was there in the 90s it felt like every social event was related to the fraternities and sororities.

Ask about the costs too. They are not insignificant.

You obviously weren't in a sorority at UVA and you're still smarting about it.

DP here. I also had a daughter -- actually, two daughters -- in the same UVA sorority several years apart. I supposed it's a "middle tier" one in the sense that it wasn't all rich kids or scholarship athletes, but it was certainly a well respected one. While it was majority white, so is UVA as a whole. It absolutely did have many women of color. The stereotype of the sorority girl being a rich blonde bimbo doesn't apply at UVA. Neither of my daughters were like that at all.

The animosity that so many DCUM women have against sororities is pretty silly. I can't help but think that it's because of their own college baggage, where they were a little too nerdy to be accepted into any sorority themselves.

Ugh. I am the parent of the two sorority women who went to UVA and you are not helping the cause AT ALL. It absolutely IS offense to dress up as Native Americans. Why do you think the Washington Football Team changed its name? My UVA daughters would agree with me on this, trust me.

As another poster pointed out, you can't always tell just by looking at people what race/ethnicity they are. It's actually pretty racist to assume to can.
