URM Daughter Rushing at UVA or VT

Just randomly searched sororities at VT and here are some pictures - if that's what you need to judge "diversity."

As for getting a bid, if she looks like Selena Gomez or Penelope Cruz, she likely won't have a problem. Everyone will just treat her like a fellow conventionally pretty White girl. If she's got the coloring and body type of America Ferrara, she probably will have trouble, unless they decide to hold her up as a token of their wokeness.

The other thing to consider is that her fellow POC students will not look positively upon her pandering to join the Hellenic types who make POC feel unwelcome and excluded on the campuses of UVA and VT. And the non-clueless White students will also look askance at it. Remember that the "You will not replace us" rally took place in Charlottesville. https://www.vogue.com/article/uva-after-charlottesville-attack

"Fellow POC students" like these? You are ridiculous.

Put being Hispanic, and I don’t mean this very disrespectfully, if she’s a student at UVA Virginia Tech, most people will assume she’s white and she’s Hispanic and doesn’t have an accent.

If she’s interested in rushing, she should know that it’s a costly commitment and it’s really about paying to be in a social club and to be in a group of friends. It can be very fun, and very social outing and party oriented, but there is usually a heavy focus on drinking and going to fraternity parties. Only 35% UVA is Greek, but when I was there in the 90s it felt like every social event was related to the fraternities and sororities.

Ask about the costs too. They are not insignificant.

You obviously weren't in a sorority at UVA and you're still smarting about it.

Incorrect, I was in one. By senior year, most of my friends realized we weren’t getting much out of paying the hundreds of dollars a semester for being in one. I had several friends deactivate to try and stop paying too. (I did not)

DP. I'm curious about this - if my daughter decides to rush and join a sorority but realizes it's not for her, is it easy enough to "deactivate," or leave? How do you do that?

Of course you can deactivate. You're not locked in for life if you don't want to be, but once you're out, you're out. There is also about a 6-8 week pledging period that allows them to judge for themselves before they are initiated as well. You can easily drop then with no effort.

These two happen to just be two examples of quite diverse sororities at UVA. There are several others. It's literally just the top ones, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Tri-delt and Theta that tend to be less diverse.

I'm thinking you're being sarcastic? Because there are plenty of POC in those pictures.
