You can die from Monkeypox

The less severe West African clade is causing the current world outbreak (2022). No one has died from this outbreak to date. But, monkeypox can lead to other problems (complications) like pneumonia and infections in your brain (encephalitis) or eyes, which can be fatal.

How do you prevent monkeypox virus?

A smallpox vaccine provides protection against monkeypox, but its use is currently limited to clinical trials. Prevention depends on decreasing human contact with infected animals and limiting person-to-person spread.

I am enough to have been vaccinated against smallpox but my kids aren’t and I’d get them vaccinated in a heartbeat. Certainly better than doing insane quarantine carousel again.

How old are you to where you are old enough to have had the smallpox vaccine AND have kids under 18? Didn’t they stop vaccinating for smallpox in like 1970?

DP but I'm 54 and my oldest just turned 18. Not uncommon at all.

DP here, but I was born in 1968, vaxxed for smallpox and have a 9yo and a 12yo. I’m hardly alone to have minor children and the smallpox vaccine.

Why would we reintroduce the smallpox vaccine when there’s a perfectly adequate monkeypox specific vaccine. It’scurrently available to people who are at high risk of exposure and they will presumably begin ramping up production to make it more generally accessible soon.

Yep, the us smallpox vaccination program wasn’t fully phased out until 1972, I believe. Plenty of people born before that with minor children especially in DC where people have kids at an older age.

Yes. The CDC should have done more back in May when it started spreading worldwide.

My husband was vaccinated before he was deployed in 2002. He was also vaccinated as a child in Honduras in the 80s.

The most recent study saw a mortality for this clade of a little over 3%. However, it is higher in children and immunocompromised persons.

NYT Spelling Bee enthusiasts, take note.

Yes! Definitely did not have that one yet. Thanks.

Thanks- I got Genius!!!!!

Because kids don't go there or use them. Kids aren't a protected class so they'll likely bear the brunt of any mitigation so that adults can continue to you know what...

Spain reported Saturday a second death in as many days from monkeypox. These are believed to be the first confirmed fatalities from the disease in Europe since its recent spread beyond Africa.

The ministry based in Madrid said both fatalities were young men. It reported its first death on Friday, the same day that Brazil also reported its first death from monkeypox.

The global monkeypox outbreak has seen more than 22,000 cases in nearly 80 countries since May.
