Is it nuts to be prepping for a food shortage?

Or buy our farmland.

So they should only ask if they get the answer they want to hear? I'm surprised how many people so far -- nearly unanimous -- are prepping to some extent. I think COVID has taught everyone that yes, shit does sometimes happen and it's good to be prepared.

Well I think OP was looking for answers from normal people to feel out how off base her mother is - and so far the answers are not from normal people. Sorry, they just aren’t.

And as I said, I am not surprised by the initial posts. There have been several threads like this on DCUM and the prepped said respond immediately. The normal folks are just rolling their eyes and not responding.

Well you're proving my point -- you only want to hear from people with one perspective, and agreeing with you makes that normal. Seems like a surprising number of people are prepping to some extent. So I guess that's normal now.

Exactly.

brown rice
canned fruits and vegetables
spam
baked beans
nuts
raisins
tuna
sardines
pasta
tons of water
powdered milk

And may other things that I can't recall that I grabbed for no real reason (e.g., boxes of stovetop stuffing, lol). I'm open for suggestions for practical items to add!

Looks good to me. Whatever you can get is better than nothing.

I have to say that I'm surprised by these answers. [/quot

Me too! I did not expect these responses.

dried beans. They don’t expire. Make sure you rotate the nuts and tuna, because those do go bad.

Our paper towel brand was $10.50 for a 10-pack a few months ago. Now they're $15. I wish I had stocked up. Er, prepped.

Few people own enough land to grow food to sustain their families; and your "neighbors" would take it from you anyways.

NP - Thankfully, we live away from DC most of the time. My neighbors grow their own food as well. No one is taking anything. I would love to see someone try. We have two large German Shepherds and we are armed. I’m a liberal Dem in favor of strict gun control. But I’m not stupid. No one would get past our gate.

We grow about 70% of our fruits and veggies. We have chickens that lay plenty for our family plus enough to share. We live in the country where wildlife is plentiful. We have a well plus a pond on our property. And I have food stored that would last my family (including my adult kids) at least six months. We are always prepared.

I don’t think we will see massive food shortages.

If it's bad enough someone will shoot and eat your dogs if they're allowed outside. (Source--mother who grew up in wartime/post war Germany.)

I swear I hate responses like this. Not because you don't have a right to your opinion, but the level of arrogance in the post. Op shouldn't have asked a question (followed by repeat posts to support her claim that her mom is nuts) if she did not want answers opposing her views. I'm glad she got the opposite of what she anticipated. Nobody is suggesting that you go tin foil hat but being prepared for the unexpected always makes sense. If a black swan event such as Covid has not taught you that catastrophes happen, I don't know what will.

I'm sure there are even more people stocking up on staples than care to admit it.

Covid was a black swan event?

Also YOU are the arrogant one - most people in this country live paycheck to paycheck. Most people in this country cannot even afford to buy more that 2 weeks worth of food at a time. So if you really believe that prepping, filling a garage with food, or buying freeze dried meals is normal, I do not know what to tell you. The extent of most peoples "prepping" is those who can afford to overspend at Costco.

Confirmed. I admittedly shop in spurts and don't fill my cart because I fear judgmental stares in the store that a full cart might bring. I go on Saturday and return on Sunday.

For what? What is it they’re in the know about that the rest of us aren’t?

I have 5 boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch in my pantry because that’s all DS will eat for breakfast and there was a deal at giant. Does that count?

I don’t doubt we will have trouble getting x and will have to substitute y, but we are not going to starve.

This is the most normal response on the thread.
