How many hostels are there in the US?

Hundreds if not thousands. https://www.hiusa.org/

That is correct. And stupid, but there you go, women can't have an abortion in this country and young adults can sleep on the road cause they are too dangerous to allow in a hotel. But, they can shoot people and join the military and buy guns.

That certainly added a lot to the discussion.

My 20 yo DS is trying to book a hotel in a major metro area but is unsuccessful. The properties ALL require the person checking in to be 21. He will be traveling alone and there's no option for an over-21 yr old to go with him. Or to "fake" check him in at the destination city.

What do young adults do in this situation?

Formal hotel worker here. Call the manager of the hotel and talk to them. Usually in these situations the hotel is put in Mom or Dad's name and on Mom or Dad's credit card.

Locally owned, older, family owned hotels will have a lot more flexibility. These places will say yes. You may have to pay a security deposit to protect against room damage. I worked at a local, family owned hotel. We rented to 18 year olds (through the parents) but we charged more per night.

Chain hotels will likely say no.

I'm the 14:15 poster/ former hotel worker.

We also had the rooms paid in advance.

I think the big concern is parties.

Have your son call locally owned places (not chains).
Locally owned places will not turn down a room rental.
The owner would call me and specifically tell me he did not want any walkouts...i.e. if anyone drove up I was to rent a room and drop the price if need be.

The place that I worked at was safe for patrons and I felt safe working there as a woman but was older and a bit seedier.

Not all airbnb allow the main renter to be under 23. Some of them will list the minimum age at time of reservation.
The few that i have in the past couple of years has said 23 and older.

I rented the hotel room for my son and called the front desk to tell them to allow him to check in for me since I would be arriving late.

It’s up to the owner. Ours is 25+.

Bizarre. My husband was a military officer at 22, and you think he's going to tear up your trashy rental? Mmkay.

Good for him? My was also a military officer at 22, but that’s not really relevant to this discussion.

I'm not the pp you are responding to, but as a military officer at age 22 he could be trusted to lead dozens (or more-depending on the branch/unit?) of his men into combat, in charge of millions of dollars worth of equipment, but can't be trusted to rent an Airbnb apartment for a couple nights?
