Why do some people decide to make fun of others?

If a funny comment pops into my head I find an audience for it, even if it’s unkind.

We are sensitive to context and culture, obviously, and don't randomly make fun of people we don't know in front of them - only when we get to know them and they're OK with it.

This.

Some people need to feel superior, so putting others down somehow makes them feel better about themselves.

The people I know that do this are unhappy. Happy people don't bring others down.

It’s learned behavior. They likely grew up in a family of bullies or a family who thinks it’s fun/funny to make fun of others. It’s dysfunctional.

It’s low class, cruel, and uncivilized humor. It’s also a sign of low intellect because making fun of others is low hanging fruit. It takes more wit and intellect to be funny without making fun of other people.

I'm sorry you're so insecure. Go ahead and deny it, but everyone sees through you.

OP, you could educate yourself about the human mind if you wanted to do your own research, and then you would have no need to ask this question.

You know PP is very pleased with her various bon mots and everyone else is like…ugh Barb saw a fat person at the grocery store again.

They need to feel better about themselves and the way they do that is by tearing someone else down.

Exactly. Unfortunately Barb doesn't know how little people think of her because of her propensity to spew her "funny comment" every time it "pops" into her head.

Most of what society finds amusing or “funny,” is generally the result of something ultimately offensive.

Humor is a deeply broken concept in the U.S., and it’s time we did something about it.

Why?

There's a parent like this at my kid's school. She comes across as awkward and always seems to be trying too hard. She's on the very fringes of two groups of friends and keeps trying to work her way in.
