Would you be ticked off if a restaurant refused to serve you a cocktail for no ID?

No, I wouldn’t be mad at someone doing their job.

—55 year old.

My 50 year old husband and I were carded within the last year at a chain restaurant we have been to several times without getting carded. We laughed and asked the server what had changed and they said some servers had been making too many wrong assumptions lately about who needed to be carded and who didn’t so for the time being they had been asked to card everyone.

I have to laugh because there are a couple of DCUMers convinced they look 25 since they still get carded.

Would I be mad at a bartender for doing her job? No. Would I be stupid enough to go out without valid ID? Also, no.

I’m 55 and still get sometimes get carded. I most definitely look 55. 😂

There is no such thing as a passive-aggressive 40-something female bartender. They are all delightful, always.

That is not true. There are no such thing as stings with 40-something people, who ordered $100 in takeout no less. Stings are teenagers.

To be more specific, it’s a solo teen and the teen comes to the bar and tries to order a single drink. It’s not covert Langley assets with a big production.

Except that they try really, really hard to find stings who look much older than their age. Like a guy who is turning 21 in a week and has a full beard. You've got to see some of those "teens". So, it really depends on the looks, I can totally understand some people in their 30s getting carded.

Had you already paid for the food since you were getting take-out? Did you include a tip? Maybe the server saw you didn’t tip for the take out food so she decided to be difficult. Were you then going to start eating your food with the margarita?

Anonymous wrote:It depends on stare or local law, but generally the law forbids serving minors, and carding is a business policy to make sure you don't violate that law. If they didn't card a 40 year old, and ABC were standing right there, they would not have been in trouble because they did not serve a minor.

This. I am amazed at the combination of ignorance and righteousness of the most PP. The law is about serving minors, not carding.

They probably got dinged recently by their local ABC. 21 year old server likely was supposed to card for 30 and under and. 21 year old doesn’t differentiate between 40 and 30. But can definitely tell 60 year olds don’t need to be carded. OP, carry your ID.

I've been carded recently and i am a couple of years older than that! I think some people card everyone, which is totally their right to do.

Of course not! Different establishments have different requirements as to what they need to see, some places are cool with you looking over 35 and some places are more conservative and will ask for an ID even if you look older. Also, if the restaurant recently had a close call or a scare they very likely are taking it more seriously so they don’t get into trouble.

When I was 21 I carded everyone because I just had no idea, everyone older than 25 looked old to me. Way too complicated trying to guess people‘s ages when I could just ask for an ID and be sure

The battle axe bartender appeared to be nearly 50 years old. No spring chicken; certainly not a naive 21 year old kiddo under strict orders.

I feel like OP has a drinking problem. I wouldn't be even a tiny bit mad, especially since this is due to self negligence.
