Casein allergies are a thing. It’s not always lactose.

Are you kidding? OP said, "I just found out at 45 that I am lactose intolerant." No mention of casein allergy, nice try though.

Hey. Sorry you feel the need to assert that. I became completely intolerant of all milk products after giving birth. It’s real. Sorry it offends you in some way even though we are complete strangers and it effects you not at all. Lactaid milk still makes me barf and wheeze. It’s not the solution for everyone.

YOU are NOT the center of the universe. I was helping the OP. Not everything in life is about you. OP wrote what like 2 sentences and YOU couldn't even bother to read it? Yet YOU were so quick to try and "correct" me even though YOU were wrong. SMH.

So many capital letters. So indignantly overinvested in a casual internet conversation about freaking milk Xanax. Take it.

Try Westsoy Plain Unsweetened milk.

Soy is really bad. Almost all soy is produced in very unhealthy ways.

Avoid Ripple. It’s peas and it’s gross.

Oatly! Delicious, fresh, and creamy.

I bought Ripple once and it felt like an oil slick had sunk into my cup of coffee.

I'm interested in how this oh I'm allergic to this or I can't tolerate this came about? It wasn't like a food sensitivity test was it?

Also someone who was dairy-free for two and a half years because her son can't tolerate dairy even through breast milk I got to drink my first glass of whole milk about 2 months after I weaned him there is nothing that tastes like milk. Nothing.

And if you have a sensitive stomach to any of the gums or carrageenan the options are even more limited.

Second the A2, or the Fairlife. My kids like Fairlife, and A2 works for the gastro issues I have with dairy came about.

For the pp I am responding to, I was fine until around 40. And then boom! My system just couldn't handle regular old milk anymore.

DP, but same here. I drank milk and ate dairy most of my life, without any problems. I Started having terrible stomach and GI issues in my mid-30s, and couldn't figure out what was going on. My GP ordered a bunch of tests (allergies, celiac, some others). All of those came back normal/negative, so he advised cutting out dairy products, suggesting possible lactose intolerance. I followed his advice, and the stomach problems completely disappeared.

I can still consume some dairy, which--for whatever reason--doesn't have as much of an effect. Kefir and hard cheese like Romano fall into this category. However, milk, soft cheese, and ice cream are all out. Pizza will cause days' worth of GI problems. So I avoid those trigger dairy foods altogether, and eat the OK ones only from time to time.

+1. Fairlife is great—more protein and less calories. Lasts a long time in the frig because it is ultra-pasturized. The whole family drinks it even though DH is the only one who is lactose-intolerant.

DH is lactose-intolerant but not allergic to milk products. I buy the Breyers lactose-free vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Trader Joe’s also has a lactose-free yogurt cheese. All taste good and are satisfying substitutes.

Not Milk

If I have to use a substitute, I think the almond/coconut blends are closest to dairy in terms of mild flavor and similar texture.

Whenever you change up your standard milk, it just takes a while to get used to the flavor. We shifted back and forth from regular milk to shelf-stable to powdered a few times when I was a kid. Powdered milk tastes gross when you aren't used to it; when you switch back from powdered to regular, it also tastes gross.
