FCPS Denying ESY Due to Staffing?

They raised the IA pay to $27.08 per hour as of today. Staffing for Foundations is the priority. A lot of IAs will work Community A or Community B but won't do Foundations.

Wow! I see FCPS cares. DCPS they only pay them $15. I’m going to let mine know to work there over the summer.

+1 IEP Law is federal, you have rights beyond what the school wants you to think. Get the lawyer if you’re ever denied services.

Yes, they should march teachers into the classrooms at gunpoint for your precious, precious bebe.

DP. They made the choice to address what is required in this way (I.e. running a school based summer program) rather than say giving parents a stipend. The cynical view could be that the failure of the plan is in fact the plan.

They still need to hire 50 more teachers and 120 more IAs to make ESY happen.

It looks like they revised down the number of teachers and IAs that they need. Maybe they have already started giving stipends to parents? Or, more likely, they just denied a bunch of kids ESY during the last few weeks.

For those who were waiting to hear from FCPS today, did you receive any communication from them?

I don’t understand the reasoning behind expecting FCPS to pay for private therapies over the summer because school is out of session?? If your kid needs extra help to not fall behind during the summer, then get them the extra help…how is this a public education issue?

Not in FCPS and my kid has never qualified for ESY. However, feel free to educate yourself: https://www.understood.org/en/articles/extended-school-year-services-what-you-need-to-know

Also it’s going to blow your mind when you realize that not everyone can afford to pay for private therapies to help their kids meet their iep goals.

I hope all your children receive placement and receive the services that they need. Please advocate and reach out to your board member, PSL and other decision makers. This is the 2nd year now for staffing shortages. With the exodus of special ed teachers, this is going to keep repeating itself unless changes are implemented. They need to offer flexible options if there aren’t enough teachers, including private tutors. And early registration like parents have to do for summer camps.

They should, but they will not. FCPS routinely denies services based on staffing. They don’t come out and state it, but when they start pulling services a child needs and there’s only only PT SLP for a school of 750 kids, it’s pretty obvious what is going on.

ESY is no exception.

Special ed teachers quit because they are being asked to do so much freaking paperwork that it is untenable. When the job goes back to actual teaching, and not recording how many times little Julie raises her hand during each twenty-minute timeframe in the school day, teachers will return. Don’t forget then making a nice chart of this hand-raising data for the ten IEP meetings for Julie in one year, insisted on by the advocate, who is raking in the money for each meeting.

Has anyone been contacted by the ESY teacher yet? We don’t even know the times of school yet.

And in ES the kids themselves can't really keep track. When we don't have enough subs for an given day, the jobs that are left unfilled are usually Cross Cat teachers and aides.

Think ESY is about retaking what was learned (not really learning new things)

retaking = retaining

I’ve taught ESY for many years. I’ve never seen it this bad. The only supplies given to me this year were a few packs of markers and a package of construction paper. No books or ability to borrow any. No games, classroom decoration, fidgets, etc. I’m ready to quit now.
