Fine China- Which set do you have and how often do you use it?

Anonymous
Another Nantucket Basket fan here. We use it daily along with Spode Blue Italian.

Also have a ton of Royal Doulton Princeton I never use and would love to find a home for.

Two other patterns I have and collect are antique Spode — one was my grandmother’ — which I use on random Sundays and Thanksgiving and Easter.

I come from a long line of china-obsessed women.

The best decision I made was to register for Villeroy and Boch Anmut china for everyday use. 12 years and it still looks fantastic, including use by kids daily. I also registered for a Monique Lhuillier for Royal Doulton set that I've only used a handful of times.

The good thing about the all white bone china (Villeroy and Boch) is that it can be dressed up too very easily with chargers, napkins, etc so we use it for guests too. It is also more accessible since in the kitchen cabinets and not in the sideboard.

I'm under 60 so I was born in an era where people don't use fine china

Yeah, no. There are plenty of people in their 30s and 40s, including me, that enjoy nice modern fine china and use it daily. I did not grow up eating off Corelle or Ikea plates and won't do so now.

Of the china sets, 1 is a set from my wedding that I've taken from 12 to 48, 1 is a set from my MIL, and 4 I've acquired through estate sales. If the set isn't full (dinner plate, luncheon plate, salad plate, b&b plate, both types of soup bowls with saucers, fruit bowl, tea cup & saucer, demitasse cup & saucer, a few platters, some serving bowls) then I usually acquire those pieces through E-bay or Replacements. The brands are Franciscan, Limoge, Minton, Haviland, Spode, and Johnson Brothers. 2 (the Spode & Johnson Brothers) are Christmas themed and do not coordinate at all imo.

I will get 2 more sets when my mother passes. Interestingly, each of the kids has a favorite so I already know who will get what when I pass. I have a similar amount of crystal and silver. I like pretty things and my kids, even our boys, do too. You should see our table when it is set. It is a sight to behold!

I wish I had a house big enough to hold all those things! I had a set I bought secondhand that I liked but gave away.

I have my grandmother’s set. I don’t love it but feel some obligation to keep it? I use it maybe a few times per year. There are 3 plate sizes and I use them all, way too many cups and saucers. Maybe I should box it up and put it in the attic and get another secondhand set I like better.

Yes, DO IT! You will be much happier - it is so nice to set a table and love the way it looks!

My formal china is Herend fishscale in rust (can look red or orange) with fun accent plates and I use it for holidays - probably 5x a year.

Do you have household staff?

Or a Chinese restaurant?

I have one by Bernadaud and one by Haviland. I never use either. I use my everyday crate and barrel.

My very poor cousins used Correlle. I vowed as a very young child never to use them. They are awful.

Huh. I'm definitely under 60 and my mom used our fine china all the time. It wasn't just for holidays but every time my parents had guests over for a nice dinner. It was pretty SOP for her to set the table nicely (well, to tell us to set the table nicely using the china and crystal she specified).

Something Lenox. I used it a lot when we were first married and when my first two kids were younger. But now with three kids and as the primary person doing the cooking and cleaning- I don’t want the extra task of pulling out the China and hand washing it all.
