That wasn’t me who said it’s always been hot. But I get your point. |
| Back in the day, I think Playboy had a ranking of top party schools and UVM was regularly listed in the top 10. Lots of kids schedule classes for Tuesday and Thursday and skied the other 5 days (Stowe and Sugarbush about 40 min away). Definitely a fun school. |

Our daughter will be a freshman at UVM in the fall. She was accepted into the Liberal Arts Scholars Program. I've also noticed the surprisingly large number of DMV students going this year.
Our visit this past summer was the clincher. The school has a TON of programs, the students seem very engaged and Burlington itself is a great college town. It's a bit of a hike (10+ hour drive including stops), but the airport is ten minutes from campus and there are daily flights to and from DC if you need to get there in a hurry. |
Not true 2 from our big three going to UVM this yer. It's gotten hot for the reasons mentioned. They have honors college and offer good merit to high stats kids and Burlington is cool. |
| Michigan and Vermont seem to be the 'in' schools where everyone applied in our area. |
| I’m hoping my younger daughter (finishing up 10th grade) applies there when her turn comes (not so presumptuous as to speculate whether it is a safety, match or reach!) but I do have one concern - NCES shows its enrollment as being 61% female. I wonder why there is such an imbalance (comparable to an LAC like Muhlenberg)? |
This is kind of an outlier, but I think you'll find that women generally outnumber men in college. |
Plus maybe the sports aren’t as big of a draw at UVM |
This is very true. UVM doesn't have a football team, but their basketball and hockey teams draw a pretty devoted crowd. |
True but the state flagships are usually much more balanced than this. Its numbers are in the Vassar range on this metric. Maybe the explanation is that a high proportion of its students are out-of-state and that group skews heavily female for the reasons described in some of the other responses (not a school that necessarily attracts young men interested in college sports)? |
“The best private schools…” 😂🤣😂🤣 Cool story. |
Even though I had a DS graduate from UVM, it seems like the UVM area rep or an insecure UVM parent has discovered this thread. I think it’s the latter, because I actually know the area rep’s writing style. The amount of sock puppetry is incredibly high. |
^ I meant an insecure DCUM parent discovered UVM! |

From Vermont Digger:
“There’s a friendly Ice Age at the University of Vermont — tuition for 2023-24 will stay frozen for the fifth straight year. UVM’s board of trustees agreed Friday to freeze tuition and fees right where they are, continuing an initiative by President Suresh Garimella to help students and families. The university will also hold room and board fees level for a fourth straight year.” Why can’t other schools do this? I remember some outcry when UVM decided to end a number of under enrolled programs. Maybe more colleges should consider similar steps if it means a 5-year freeze on tuition/room and board |
| UVM instituted ED for the first time this year, that’s a pretty good sign that the popularity is not just anecdotal. |
