College and University Discussion

I went to UVA. UVA is a higher ranked school and considered more prestigious. But I don’t see any difference in terms of future success and opportunities. VT has a huge network of graduates doing great things.
My siblings all went to VT and are more professionally successful than me. But I was always smarter and got better grades. Lol! |

The conversation should be which schools is better FOR YOUR KID.
Some kids would do well at either. Some kids would be better of at one over the other. This is not an objective decision. The needs of your kid need to drive this. |
+1 If you send your kid to a certain school because it's ranked higher in a certain subject, but the kid is miserable, they aren't going to get the grades to get into medical school. |

Only for McIntire Commerce school.

Yep. My kid was accepted at both but clicked the most with VT. Other kids would choose UVA. The most important thing is fit, though some parents seem to completely discount that. |
+1. The schools aren’t even close statistically. UVA is leaps and bounds over VT in stats. UVA is also a huge producer of Rhodes Scholars and other overseas fellowships whereas VT us not. |
| Does not matter OP. Getting into med school is really hard. Your kid has to get the top grades and MCAT scores and have some good experience in labs or working in hospitals, etc. |
I think DCUM parents disproportionately discount fit b/c they are prestige-obsessed and want to be able to tell others that their DC went to so and so school. |
| UVA is significantly better and it’s not even close. |
| As I've seen written on so many college comment boards (not here): If you want a job that pays well, then you go to Virginia Tech. |
Then you’re not very intelligent |
| Look at comments on sites such as Niche.com, where actual students share their opinion on the school. Very enlightening. |
| Yes |
What majors, though? Not every kid will major in CS or Engr |
| Michael Vick was a better QB than anyone I can recall coming out of UVA. |
