Best admitted student days?

The first hour is a very engaging lecture with a different professor from a different department each week, and the second hour is a small group discussion facilitated by a college senior and covers the reading, but also let's the students talk with each other. The course is free and is two credit hours if you end up going to Oberlin. It's been awesome as our DS is getting rid of pre-college jitters, the class is interesting, and he is excited every Tuesday. It's been interesting for us because Oberlin was one of three schools that DS was truly viewing as of equal interest, but now he only talks about Oberlin and this class. He hasn't made a final decision (and we haven't either as we will have to sign off), and things could change, but it's looking like Oberlin. And if so, he world go in with some added confidence.

Definitely a +1 on the Oberlin class for admitted students (the in-person admitted student events there were all very nicely done as well). The Oberlin class every Tuesday night is now the highlight of her week, especially as senioritis sets in. I can hear from the next room and the lectures seem interesting, and the follow-up discussions even more so.

Brown was our least favorite. Parents weren’t allowed. And the sessions were the least academic focused of others we attended.

Well, Brown among the Ivies is the most "loosey goosey" with respect to its curriculum (you can do whatever you want). So not surprised there was less of an academic focus. Probably why kids like it.

I miss the old days where you stayed in dorms, went to frat parties and then your parents picked you up the next day

Agreed. DC was deciding between VT and JMU. Ultimately chose JMU because of the event and how engaged he felt. The chance to meet with current students, talk to professors, and he was invited to sit in on a class he loved sold him. And the rec center.

Good for Brown!

+1

We only attended one, at W&M. It was very well done, but I wish parents had a separate session track or were otherwise not allowed to attend sessions with their kid. Some kids had many family members with them. It made it difficult for DD to talk to other kids. I dropped DD off and walked around Colonial W'burg thinking she'd have more fun getting to know people without me there, but no such luck. She still liked the school, but was sad she didn't get to interact with many other kids.

That is interesting bc W&M orientation *does not* include parents with their kids. You move in, orientation starts and your kid is busy. Even in Covid, we moved in, fed her lunch, went to Target, and were given the boot. We spent the night, met her roommate’s family for lunch the next day and then went to the beach for the weekend. There was no in person Parent orientation - all by zoom bc of Covid. This year will hopefully be back in person.

We are talking about Admitted Students Day

I'm guessing that PP was pointing out W&M's approach to Admitted Students Day was different than their approach to new student orientation in the fall.

Not thrilled with admitted student days that require a booster

You'll have a tough time in September. Colleges are requiring them.

Ditto. UVA did a better job and ultimately DOTL is what swung her vote.

Interesting. We found DOTL to be pretty underwhelming. We had the worst tour (of the Engineering school) of any college we visited. Other events provided little information that was useful, and the scheduling seemed to make us always too late or too early for things. We left after about 4 hours and could have easily bailed after 1.5 without missing much.

I think my DC would have much preferred this format and would have decided by now. I wish I could just go drop them off right now so we could get this decision over with.

That’a crazy. What is the reasoning?

Even for kids who have already had Covid? That makes zero sense and is very anti-science. Hope that changes soon.

This was Bryn Mawr too (unless dd missed the email???). I was like...well you are not Brown, so sorry but you need an admitted student day...kids are still trying to decide! Ultimately their loss...DD said nope without having a day to talk to professors etc.

Omg.

I applied to college, got accepted and showed up without a prior visit. Y’all are fascinating with this admitted student day business. 😱That’s some fancy pants for sure.

For a more intimate setting the YouBelong or Green&Gold days would have been the days to go. During those the kids get separated from the parents/family for 2-3 hrs and get to meet current students and attend mock-lectures. They also get a current student guide who walks them around and lets them in on all things W&M. It is actually what just confirmed it for my DD, that this was the place for her.

Not sure about frat parties, but Yale is having students stay in dorms for two nights if they want to and parents aren't invited to any events. The students go from Monday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon.
